very different from saying that there's a thin line from being a winning small stakes player and a winning high stakes player.

The man said something reasonable for once.

Evidence what limit poker does to you

I imagine they both have the GTO solutions on hand when playing, so why would they ever play a raked game?

You can't possibly memorize that much information, and I'm pretty sure even a GTO solver would take far too long to operate at HU limit Holdem game speed. They both might have access to the game's solution, but playing 200 hands an hour or whatever, mistakes are going to made.
05-28-2017 , 03:37 AM
I imagine they both have databases with the full solution (or at least a good subset) on hand. Would be pretty naive to think otherwise.
05-28-2017 , 03:58 AM
Most intelligent poker players can apply the limit hold em solutions in game without accessing the software with a pretty high degree of accuracy. The same is true for those who study with solvers.
05-28-2017 , 07:08 AM
even the best hu lh players dont play all that optimally. there are quite a few possible situations in poker so it's hard to memorise too much.
05-28-2017 , 07:19 AM
Considering the amount of money available for it I can't imagine that todays top HULHE "players" deviate from the optimal solution at a rate which makes them playing eachother a worthwhile endeavour.

I mean, the game is solved, and the size of a very-near-optimal solution shouldn't be big enough to cause issues loading the solution in real time. Scrape cards from screen, run program on laptop next to screen, laptop instantly delivers very-near-optimal solution instantly.

we're talking about what top regs do not what they could theoretically do.

they dont play too optimally

When that GTO LHE bot came out a couple of years ago, I played it for a bit just out of curiosity to see what it felt like to get absolutely buzz-sawed by the solution to a game I'm semi-ok at but nowhere near an expert. Maybe 300-400 hands in, I'm somewhere close to even, and just gave up playing because of the slowness of the ****ing thing. Maybe it was just the terrible software interface, but it definitely didn't play at online poker heads up match speed.
05-28-2017 , 09:59 AM
IIRC Cepheus plays slow on purpose

It's also why I wrote near-solution, since that will be a lot smaller than a total solution (making querying the database faster) yet effectively mean the same winrate against humans
05-28-2017 , 11:01 AM
Cepheus lag is mostly from internet as far as I know? anyway I dont get how this is a discussion. rail a session of two regs playing at look at the hands that go to showdown. hu matches happen often enough (which in itself should tell you that the game isn't being played too close to optimally - rake isn't entirely insignificant even at 50/100 etc.)

Was railing the Sauce v honeybee few months back and caught a few hands where both seemed to play off-Nash(=bad). Checked afterwards from Cepheus DB and the spot where Sauce raised, Cepheus suggested 0% raise and 100% call. Not 100% if honeybee made any dominated plays, and they might've all been just when he landed on the small x% of mixed strat, or he had an exploitative reasoning based on Sauce's tendencies.

Also Cepheus has leading range on certain flops when called from BB with some very peculiar hands, that I've never seen any human player take that line with.

I don't think Cepheus DB is downloadable from anywhere, and hard to say if anyone has queried the bot enough to grab the full gametree. (IIRC it's more than >1TB?)
05-28-2017 , 02:56 PM
the game is obviously very far from being played optimally... use your brains.

JRB has to be the goat whale hunter. i'd read a book about it
