We're not in Kansas anymore. No, we're in Oz. And Down Under, it seems everyone is treated equally. That means even Phil Ivey is subject to the same rules as the rest of the field. At the Crown, players are not allowed to use their phones for Internet, texting, tweeting, or anything else while sitting at the table. Ivey got up from the table to discuss sports betting lines on the phone in between hands, but then he sat back down at the table and sent a text message.
Boom! The floor came over and explained that he'd broken the rules. No warning for the man. Instead, he was issued a five-minute penalty. That made him furious. Several levels of floor staff were called in to discuss the rule with him. Ivey claimed he didn't know about the rule, but the floor didn't buy it. They reminded him of the all of the other years he has played at the Crown and assured him the rules were always the same. One pointed out that he'd played the $100k yesterday and thus had to have been made aware that he couldn't text at the table.
Ivey told the floor that the rule meant he wouldn't be able to play these tournaments anymore and that he'd just continue taking penalties until he ran out of chips. So far, however, he is getting up to send his texts.

It seems that the drama of Phil Ivey's time penalty earlier on in the day has subsided, as both he and tablemate Perry Friedman have been hamming it up on the feature table, comparing his "furious" face and his "game" face and sharing a laugh or two with our reporters.

Friedman pulled up a picture of Ivey on his iPhone and showed the PokerNews crew, but it was actually a screenshot of Ivey's avatar on Full Tilt Poker, and as you may know, you can adjust its "mood".

"Can you see the difference?" Friedman asked media row as he held up the phone next to Ivey, who flashed a grin. Naturally, this sent the gallery and our bloggers into stitches!

Bad rule, getting up from the table to use devices should be allowed. Is someone going to follow every player who leaves the tournament area to see if they are using their device.

That is allowed - you can get up from the table to text - but Phil was seated when he sent it. definitely no problems using your phone away from the table at Crown.

Ahh poor Ivey having a hissy fit cause he has to abide by the rules like every1 else. Like Crown care about a guy who turns up for a week every year. I always liked Ivey for the way he carried himself, but this shows how he really thinks. I thought he was more grounded than that.

its so stupid rule they walked up to me and asked if I was using my iphone for music or texting since I had my headphones in while fidding with phone. I said music obv although I was using it for both. She said that was fine. so dumb
