I'm pretty sure he would only need to read 1 or 2 books for this to happen.

Re: How did Bobby Baldwin become CEO of MGM/Mirage?
Bobby has a business degree from Oklahoma State U. He went to Vegas during his years there and came back after winning some big dough and then moved there after he graduated.
So you have a bright guy with a business degree who knows poker. Seems logical to hire him as a consultant for your poker room.

OK I think we can safely asssume that it's not uncommon for someone to attain the position of CEO for some .com business or something of that nature, but if you want to become CEO of a financial institution or partner in a law firm it's probably a good idea to get your degree.

Re: How did Bobby Baldwin become CEO of MGM/Mirage?
Most any business success stories, according to psychologish Adele Schele who studied the careers of top CEO's, involves being at the right place at the right time with a unique skill set AND attracting the attention of someone that will help you rise to the top...so the story of Bob Baldwin being a gambler who attracted the attention of Steve Wynn at the Golden Nugget makes sense as it seems to fit that pattern...
if Steve Wynn had valued having someone with a ton of academic acheivements, Bob Baldwin would not have gotten his break from him, and perhaps never gotten a break from anyone
Steve Wynn himself i believe got his break from Michael Millken and the junk bond market...Millken was busy selling junk bonds to savings & loans that needed higher returns on their investments as they were losing their depositor base to commercial banks due to banking deregulation put through during the Reagan Administration...without bank deregulation Millken would have probably moved on to some other part of the stock & investment industry and never have come gotten to be a big name in the investment world...Miilken was on the look out for any company to offer bonds to the investing public...Steve Wynn had a dream of going upscale after years of operating as a small fish in gaming...
the bottom line is the right set of people have to cross paths at the right time for someone to become an industrial tycoon...
those with less education are more willing to take risks and start their own business, as they are usually at a disadvantage getting hired by others...its either boom or bust for them...but someone with an education is more likely to have a good life without suffering significant financial extremes
(personnally i don't believe a CEO of a major corporation is necessarily a successful person )

lol There are a TON more.
But we're getting off topic. I heard the "wynn" story too, not sure if it's true, but guessing it is.

**In 1973, Gates entered Harvard University as a freshman, where he lived down the hall from Steve Ballmer, now Microsoft's chief executive officer. While at Harvard, Gates developed a version of the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer - the MITS Altair.
In his junior year, Gates left Harvard to devote his energies to Microsoft, a company he had begun in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen.**
He got what he needed.

Re: How did Bobby Baldwin become CEO of MGM/Mirage?
Gates can be called a college drop-out only very literally. When you leave Harvard because you have better things to do, you're not exactly the kind of person that everyone thinks of as a college dropout.
