Wolf & Hound is decent, I found their food lacking, but their drinking atmosphere is pretty solid (esp the lounge area), funny cause its one of the 3 places I've drunk @ in kits before (dentrys, Wolf and Hound, Local Public Eatery). Didn't necessarily have to be this week, but just seems like a solid idea

I grew up in Ontario and remember summer being so hot you wished it was winter, and the winter is so ****ing cold you wished it was summer. Fall and spring are the only good seasons out East.
I love the temperature being 20-25C in the summer most of the time.
Well it all depends where this wedding took place; my guess is in the boonies since we do not have mosquitoes nor black flies downtown and very few in the island suburbs. My guess is your friend`s wedding took place somewhere in the outskirts of Montreal (South Shore, Laval etc.) but that is not Montreal. Of course many people refer to anywhere near the island of Montreal as MTL.

I have to agree Montreal gets very hot and this summer we`ve had record breaking heat waves. But some people love the heat, some don`t.

BC is very nice, I am not the biggest fan of rain and it rains a lot there but it is true that BC does not get as hot or as cold as the 514.

Also if you only speak English chances are you will simply not enjoy Montreal to the fullest since it is truly a multi-cultural city.

Good luck to all the grinders moving to BC, it is simply stunning and people are nice. Also if you like skying, snowboarding, bananas and asian girls you will have a blast!!

Tio Pepes (Mexican w/ Yucatan focus) on Commercial Drive used to be decent and good value but I read a couple of bad reviews recently. Anyone been lately?

Don Guacamole's on Robson is good especially if you're into massive quantities of meat.

Pretty much the first thing I hit up when I go back to Cali everytime is good Mexican.
There was a little restaurant called Mexico Rico at 309 West Pender that was good. I took a co-worker from California there three years ago and he said it was the best Mexican food he had since moving to Vancouver. They would play Mexican soap operas in the afternoon. Too bad it closed.

Try out Al-Basha's in Kits (W Broadway & Bayswater) for real good food. Or if you can wait, Nuba (which also has a smaller lunchtime cafe somewhere near yaletown) on Cambie & Hastings is legit.

And I cannot speak more highly of food in Van than the pupusas at Rinconcito Salvadorean (Commercial & 4th).

Post here if you guys are going out again (or if you're drinking anywhere near Kits.)

~
+1 to these recs. Papusas at Rinconcito are awesome and Nuba's Tajibs cauliflower is crazy good (as is all of their food). Nuba also has a location on Main/3rd that is less busy.

Bahn Mi situation is solid but you have to get into East Van to get the best. Get to Au Petite Cafe on Main/33rd for my favourite. They sell out. There are dozens of Viet places up Kingsway that will do a solid one as well.

Mexican: Really lacking compared to anywhere in the USA. Whoever said "Las Margs on 4th" shouldn't be allowed to give recs anymore. That place is the definition of ****ty mexican food.

La Taqueria is very good (but tacos only). Dona Cata is an institution on Victoria and 37thish. Haven't been to Don Quac's but have heard OK things.

So agreed on mexican food, my first stop when home is a mexican food cart then pizza for dinner

EDIT: Who's up for a Kits drinking night in the next couple of weeks, seems like a fair number of the people in this thread live in/near kits.
Kits is probably the most boring part of the city when it comes to eating/drinking IMO so I don't go 'out drinking' there often. But, if you include restaurant bars then:

ReFuel (solid beer and cocktails)
Abigails Party
Wolf and Hound

and.... ya. Go to Gastown to drink.

There's apparently some decent events coming up at Cascades in September. Anyone have info on these?

You might want to re-read what I said. I didn't claim it was outstanding or anything, and I specifically mentioned that Mexican food in Vancouver < Mexican food in the US.

Yeah, for the most part agreed, but sometimes it is nice to know a couple places closer than DT area to drink, UBC's an annoyingly long commute sometimes.

Thank you btw, i forgot the name, but the restaurant that started with A that was a girl's name in Kits i mention earlier was Abigail's party, great place. Wolf & Hound screwed up last time I went there on a simple lamb stew, not sure I've forgiven them for that, although it isn't a bad place to drink.

EDIT: Definitely playing the 330 NLHE at edgewater, not the HA

Yes! If I actually pull off this move and these people return a goddamn email on Craigslist we will start a game for sure. Would it be as easy as arranging a time to come in and telling them we want to start playing hu or do they need a good interest list first?

Not really sure what you guys were expecting in regards to mexican food.
Basically the only Spanish ppl living in Vancouver are esl students and there aren't many.

You guys better get used to the cheap world class sushi that's everywhere instead.
Also, learn how to snowboard

No one has mentioned Vera's burger shack. ate there once not a big burger fan but i hear good reviews from friends and family.

Richmond is the place to come for Chinese and Japanese food. there are a TON of mom and pop type restaurants.

also Richmond plays host to a unique dining experience known as "all u can eat sushi" <20$ and its pretty much a whole menu, not just sushi u can get bbq pork / chkn, spring roles what/ev. the quality isn't great but its eatable and well, the service is part of the "experience" two places that come to mind are sui sha ya in landsdown mall. and richmond sushi. been to sui sha ya and its quaint. never been to richmond sushi.

and for the pizza lovers, Flying wedge has the best yuppie pizza around.

fwiw i think cactus club is best of the chain restarunt fare. i was just at the yaletown one this week and ran into chef Rob Feenie. was cool to get our pic with an Iron chef challenger. had the Jack Daniels BBQ ribs which were darn good but a bit pricy @ 25$ the signature ceaser was excelent. if ur coming from south of the border u might want to try a ceaser, i hear they're not widely known outside canada. for desert we had some peanut butter crunch bar thing which was super good, i had a beautiful which is hennesy (cognac) and grand marnier in a brandy glass resting on a mug of hot water. good desert drink for the connoisseur. all together, 3 alcoholic drinks (belleni, ceaser and beautiful) ribs, cajun chicken burger, one appy (spicy chicken) and the shared desert. 83$ so 1/3 was the ribs and 1/3 was the drinks. i diddnt think it was that bad. is there cheaper food elsewhere thats probably as good if not better? hell ya. but ~100$ with tip for very nice friendly service and a nice quiet meal with my wife i think is worth it. not the place we would have chosen but she was on assignment for work. ergo the meal was also free =)

P.S. does anyone else live in Richmond?
