Yeah, the hundreds of dollars a month in higher rent are totally worth occasionally having to get a cab _if_ you stay out very late.

BTW there are busses until 3 AM and then the seabus starts again at like 6 so it's a very specific 3 hour window, not hard to plan your night to end by 3 or go until 6

I don't see why more players don't just get a working holiday visa in australia or new zealand or something. you get a work visa, can open a bank account and you can stay for like a year. i think you can extend it for another year after that. just have to be between 18-30 and have a little bit of money in your bank account and you can apply.

none of this oh maybe i can stay for 3 months and it's all iffy about finding a place and hopping the border.

PLO games at Edgewater are like free money just FYI if you ever feel like a night out, $5-$5 is probably like microstakes to you but the players are terrible and the stacks are deep. Saw a guy call $1000 on the river w/ one pair. Lots of old gamblers who will put their $3000 stack in with a king high flush draw etc. etc.
ok wtf that's not how it went down for me...

I've been searching high and low for the ONLY PLO GAME IN VANCOUVER. And I heard Edgewater is the place, asking the front desk its full of the same people usually so I'm thinking, "Ok reg infested no fish, sounds like minus EV" but being the adventitious ****** I am I decided after dropping my father off at the airport I decided to go to Edge... the only problem is I went during the worse possible time ever

1 AM monday morning and there is only 5 of them at the table... the minimum buyin was 200 and it was 1/2 PLO. HOLY COW my first LIVE PLO game I was so excited!!! Until I sat down...

I was the 6th player or more like "short stack fish." LUL WUT 100 bb is a short stack fish? Look around you...

normally the stacks for 5 dollar chips they would equal high to 100$, but not these boys ... it was the same height but with 25$ chips! And more than one stack to boot! OMFG THESE ARE THE BIG BOYS.

On that felt there was almost 10G on the table, and I felt stupid bringing $200 espically when they told me there was a mandatory straddle UTG, but wait! Another player double straddles as well! Every hand this was happening while they ridicule me for waiting for my BB "C'mon you never know the bad beat jackpot will happen" and Wow I realize I am the short stack nit fish

These guys came to play and I was a nuisance in their way, waiting to fed their deeds. Every hand was a double straddle and every hand the pot was an average of 500$, bluffing rivers, folding sets on the turn (guy to my right showed his hand to flaunt his folding skillz), folding 2nd nuts, it was all there. The solid play I would have dreamed of if I ever going to have a stack like theirs...

But what can I do.. I only have $200...

my first few orbits I couldn't believe how card dead I was (NO DOUBLE SUITED FFS) so on my 2nd staddle I decided to raise it up with AJQT and managed to cbet take it down against 2 guys, I felt so proud winning my first pot against the boys! But then they started targeting me...

They wanted me to triple straddle I'm like, "No man I'm so poor, being short stack sucks." So one guy offered to pay half of it... not wanna being a dick I oblige and played the hand. Ended up bleeding more chips... soon they were like "Why don't we just make it 5$-$5?" and i'm like "NO you do that and I will go, I can't afford this game no more" luckily you gotta keep the fish playing right? hehe that's right stop messing with my effective stack size :P

I remember having AAxx but ending up folding preflop because I didn't want to pot $120 bucks and having 40$ to shove the flop when I KNEW 4 callers would call along. Showdown happened and I ended up calling them "SUCH TRUE GAMBLERS" and one guy told me, "we aren't your typical grinder since we aren't trying to pay for a mortgage, we are just trying to have some fun." And I knew this wasn't my game... if I couldn't shove my 30bb stack after the double straddles with AAxx man wtf am I even doing here?

But I never gave up, I felt if I can somehow survive with these hardcore bunch I can perhaps have a small shot at the poker world. It was the tests of all tests and an hour later I was the 2nd last player to leave the table I almost wanted to tell him I would play him HU but only having $130 left I think it was an insult to his 2000$ or so stack so I didn't bother... I maybe busto but I got more dignity then that.

Then I proceeded to play holdem for two hours and got my money as a 95% favorite with 22 on a 23J board with the villian holding AA. When the A hit the turn the whole table starting drooling over the bad beat jackpot and I was ready to leave my seat.

I left back into my car while kept looking at the Matt Jarvis poster, it was not meant to be as I walk towards the underground casino as an attempt to sleep in my car, knowing I got a work in the downtown area at 7 am. But I was so amped up from the PLO game and the bad beat in holdem I decided to drive home to Surrey around 5 am. My work partner picked me up at 6 am and as I headed downtown, sleeping on the microwave (yes work truck has a microwave in front of me) as I dream being on that poster.

i asked them if i were to pot it to 132$ would they fold? all 5 players acting behind said no

i don't mind going 2 callers with AAxx but not all players involved sorry... when they clearly will not fold just to knock me out

and no not even a single suit with them

yeah I guess that I forgot to mention that you shouldn't play the game if you only have enough for a minimum buy in and are going to fold Aces because you're scared of getting it in without a huge edge

^ i was the tourist, 200 dollars is all i have. My mind was locked towards surviving till my shift started and would be happy being up 50 bucks. After PLO going home 70 bucks broker was not the night I wanted.

how the hell i was suppose to know that 200$ was not enough for a supposedly 1/2 PLO game? It was poor table selection sure, but I just wanted my feet wet for PLO live that badly.

NOt like i didn't have more money but just I didn't have the gamble in me.

edit: we always lock our doors, those times are over

If $200 was all you had, you shouldn't of sat down in the PLO game. It plays quite large, but I've sat in it with $200 or $300 buyin after a Canucks game and won $1000+ in the game, I've also lost my buyin in 5 min. before.

If the goal was to win, you should re-pot your AAxx hand, If the goal was to last long either buyin twice for $100 at 1/2 NL or play 4/8 limit holdem.

I do agree, that the 1/2/5/10(sometimes) game is not low stakes poker. They also had a game in Langley that died as well. The 2/2 PLO died as well at Boulevard, although they claim they will put a list up for it.
A big problem is dealers and players are lazy and always want to round up to 5's to count easier., I think a solution is to get a low roller 1/1 PLO game with a $50-$100 buyin.
The stacks would still get up in the size of a 1/2NL game, but you wouldn't get people like vap3 scared beyond their means. The main complaint is that it's to hard to count the pot in a white chip game, but I disagree completely with this.

Jeff Hwang PLO author, recently restructured the Aria game to be different than the Venetian game. The main idea was eliminating straddle, and not rounding up in all games, to not make them bigger than needed.

Here's the arguments in that thread.

I believe you can only stay in CA 1 day shy of 6 Months per Year to Date (not per year), so you can't do that I don't think, best to talk to an immigration lawyer or the likes most likely. So you can go to CA for ~6 months, leave for 6, then do it again, or split up your stay somehow.

Maybe Mexico in the summer Vancouver in the Winter (if you ski )

I moved to Vancouver at the beginning of July. Pretty awesome city especially if you love pot. The food does kinda suck though compared to most major US cities and expect to spend a fortune on groceries unless it's ****ty quality. I really miss Trader Joe's in that regard. And yea liquor is a ripoff and 12% sales tax lol. I was in North Van which is great but moved to a 1 br in Burnaby which is ok, but would rather be closer to downtown.

I'm in deep cove, and this ****ing sucks. so much. I don't go out late anymore for this reason exclusively, I don't hate spending my cash in clubs but cabs just gouge you. I think we have some of the most expensive cabs in the world too. they got some monopoly on the licenses or something

I've not played much live poker in vancouver but i've always enjoyed the players at the table.

Soo wrong, there are a FEW decent places which have correct price points. I mean as far as knowing where to go I DO (I work in the industry and so do alot of my friends), coming from NY Vancouver sucks. High-end is most certainly better than lots of cities, anything below that is as a rule of thumb sub-par for the price point.

Only a slight offense to you, but I find the people who like Vancouver food joints that aren't the upper end ones are not the most culinarily in-tune people...I mean I have yet to have a Gyro or Felafel anywhere close to NY standards (and thats at double the price) and i reiterate, most food in Van is Sysco junk (which some people oddly like, i mean its good and stodgy, not good though for what's charged).

EDIT: I guess I should ammend this by saying I'm talking about DT core, near the Edgewater, Kits and UBC area.

Vancouver is considered by many to have the best selection of upscale casual 'chain' restaurants in the world.

It the home to Earls, Joey's, Cactus Club Cafe, Browns, Milestones(meh), Hapa Izakaya, The Keg, Memphis Blues and others... No they aren't cheap, but they aren't a ripoff.

If you are considering more than just the food (atmosphere, drinks, hot waitresses) etc. it is hard to find a city that has more reliable upscale casual options than Vancouver.

But don't you consider these joints just to be more watered down "Fare"?

I am in agreement with your point but I think all those chains fit in the Sysco debacle. I don't get why we love our "totally standard fare" diners and they've all become pretty massive players too. Don't get me wrong either, I'm happy to eat at those, if I have the cash.

Go live around broadway and such if you want good, cheap-ish food.
Londsale has some decent foods too. but you REALLY gotta look hard to find some cheap and tasty food around van.

Above poster has it right about Broadway. Commercial Drive is a good area too.

Don't know as I should give away secrets but there are a few great cheap spots on Davie west of Burrard (downtown). Stepho's in particular comes to mind (Greek) and there's a very good gyro place too.
