Re: Economic crisis : is Las Vegas going under ?

It was inevitable with all the overbuilding they have done but they say the tourists are still coming:

"Horsford says the local economy is struggling not because fewer tourists are coming to Vegas, but because the people who do come are spending less money."

Vegas is always going to be around, and I think everybody should see it at least once in your life even if you're not a big gambler. Most people don't realize it but the strip is about 3 or 4 miles long -- it is really quite a sight if you have never been there before.

The whole United states are going under. Singling out a certain state is just plain foolish.

Not that the rest of the western world is any better off but we're just in the inevitable era of the end of a fiat currency.

Lets face it Vegas is starting to price itself out of the market. I stayed at The Aria and had a basic breakfast that cost me $32.

It will still attract many but many will just choose other destinations due to the price

Economic crashes cause deflation without inflating forces. Buying gold in deflation is the worst thing you could do.

Gold is dead as a basis for currency. Energy would be a more likely to replace gold in the unlikely death of fiat currency.

Re: Economic crisis : is Las Vegas going under ?

i have never been to vegas... florida just uncapped all poker games. that means instead of paying out the ass for travel expenses i can play as high as i want going 3 miles down the road. now mind you i will eventually go to vegas for the wsop. but cash game wise there is no reason to head to vegas. florida uncapping its games could spell the downfall of vegas. hopefully for vegas' sake online poker and gaming is legalized in the us.

Re: Economic crisis : is Las Vegas going under ?

I went to Vegas last month and it was fairly busy. Lot's of people, busy casinos, busy nightclubs, traffic jams, people walking slow as **** on the sidewalk. I'm sure there are problems but 'Vegas going under!' give me a break!

Although I do agree with the above poster - it's expensive now. It was much better back in the day (without the mob of course).

But on the video , Cenk seems to say the contrary : because of the crisis, casinos are so desperate that they are starting to give away cheap bedrooms etc. in order to get customers to gamble there !?

I just went once in Las Vegas. It was in 1996 with my parents when I was still a little girl. I remember staying at the Hilton. We had a big suite, and my father kept saying that , despite that, it was yet the least expensive hotel from our whole trip in the United States. Things may have changed a lot. But a priori it seems to make sense to me in difficult economic times (to low the fees to sleep, if we can get more gamblers).

you know i really havent seen much. my old roomie gets 90$ and 115$ weekend at bellagio. but let me put it delicately. for me and a friend to go to vegas for a weekend from ft laud its about 400$ each travel. not to mention food and other expenses its probably close to 600-700$ in fixed expenses. just to play poker it costs a few hundred dollars a day in fixed expenses. if i drive down the road it costs me less than $3.
