Re: Doug Polk's Youtube Videos Thread

4 outs out of 37 on 9th street, x outs out of 36 on 10th street, Doug has 3 cards to retake the lead..... my guess is that the deal of 17/84 equity was in the right neighborhood. Didn't find much when I googled 10 card stud equity calculator tho.

For some odd reason landscape just isn't a thing on YouTube live. So you either stream in portrait and get 1,000 snarky comments about it, or you try to appease them and get angles like this. Shaun probably did it because the chat was screaming at him to turn the phone sideways.

damn these 2 commentators at pnia are so damn annoying, why cant they just offer 2 Streams 1 with and 1 without commentators for the ones that want to listen to the table talk, only 1 hour into the stream replay and already tilted as ****

Had to fix the flipped video. Doug, you can have it if you want to host it on your page then I'll remove it from mine.

....doug, you need to replace the clip on your YT channel with this fix ASAP. your current video is causing thousands of people to tilt (their heads)!

Re: Doug Polk's Youtube Videos Thread

why is there a perception or feeling that Doug Polk is good for poker? and that he wants to "grow poker"

sure he has 70k subs on youtube but i bet most of them are familiar with poker. they get sound strategy advice + funneled to upswing training site.

He's good for poker in the sense that he's a pretty likeable guy, no scandals that I'm aware of, and produces good content for ppl interested in poker.

But I agree that he won't be good for poker in the sense you seem to be talking about (i.e. Growing poker, getting new players interested, etc). His videos contain a lot of inside baseball which, on one hand, makes them great for poker players with a fundamental understanding of the game, but alternatively, go over the head of ppl without that knowledge. There's a reason the WSOP commentators are who they are. Poker players laugh at their analysis, but espn wants to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

I don't really think that's his goal.

You must be an older dude based on your join date + ignorant opinion but since you don't present much of an argument, a TLDR is a good % of his viewerbase are rec players who enjoy watching someone explain diff. hands to them or just enjoy his commentary on these random high stakes hands that have happened over the last 5+ yrs. I wouldn't say anywhere near a majority are paying upswing members sucking out your micro stakes games profits. Youtube, similar to twitch, have been monumental in keeping poker growing over the past couple of years and continue to draw in a lot of people who either had no idea the extent to which poker existed or were too intimidated to hop into it themselves / not interested until they saw someone they really enjoy watching making money out of it. Lots of twitch/youtube viewers enjoy splashing around and aren't going to be the type to put in large amounts of effort to become winning regs, more so just enjoy the game and put in deposits / play live to give it a try and have it become a hobby.

Also your first part saying why is there a perception or feeling that Doug Polk is good for poker? and that he wants to "grow poker" , is super contradictory to your opinion that all of his viewer base is already poker players paying Doug for more info because even if that were true, you prove Doug has a $$$ vested interest in growing poker and bringing more new players into the game. He is also more of the type to stand up for players vs someone like Negreanu because he can speak about things he doesn't like pokerstars doing / popular figures in the communitys actions due to not being under the payroll of amaya.

unsurprisingly you missed his point. Do you think the people who go to upswing actually put the effort in and make the games tougher? I can tell you just from reading the facebook posts there that a bunch of people misapply a bunch of concepts that Doug and Ryan teach. Maybe they won't be completely clueless but they're not exactly making money or going to beat an even moderately tough table and they're dead money against competent players...they're there because of Doug. Sorry if you're not a competent player (not you in particular, but the people who complain about this).

I joined Upswing about two months ago after surfing most of his youtube work. Been playing a few sessions a month, mostly live 1/2 & 2/5 cash games since 2005. Always read poker books, lingered P5 and 2P2, daily checked CP & PokerNews. Would never consider myself a profitable player before- probably break-even at best. Upswing is the first time I have used a training site.

At first I was applying techniques at 1/2 & 1/3 live that were a little advanced for most and went on a 10 buy-in loss. But I am glad I jumped in and applied what I learned. I saw what was and wasn't working at those stakes. I choose to apply certain things depending on the table and I am finding more success.

Most importantly, there is a certain level of confidence that I have that was not there before. I feel like I had the ideas of what Doug was saying but couldn't put them into context and application. He puts material plainly and applies examples well. However, If I were to read and try to learn from the Facebook group, it would not be a good venture. I am happy with the Lab and will continue to look forward to new content.

To get on to the question of whether Doug is growing poker, without a doubt I would say yes. I'm surprised by how many people mention him by "Doug" now and how people know who the speaker is talking about. One could say that's simply growth of a brand and that would be correct. But Doug's ability to relate and teach helps him reach a tantamount number of players in a varying spectrum of ways that make them more likely to be active within the poker community in one way or another.

Re: Doug Polk's Youtube Videos Thread

One thing I really like about Doug is he his constant hammering of 'man of the people' Negreanu. It's hilarious that someone like Hellmuth is probably more respected then Negreanu now amongst poker players, what a fall from grace.

the most annoying thing about negreanu is that he thinks because hes good at cards he knows a ton of other things. this is particularly obnoxious cuz hes not actually, yanno, good at cards.

Cmon guys, DNegs is not a bad guy, do you really think otherwise? I really think he has a good heart and good intentions. He's a little delusional, yeah, but he's not the enemy here!

I don't think he's delusional, I think DNegs is a liar. A liar is "a bad guy", especially when he may influence people since his voice is heard by thousands upon thousands of people.

Daniel comes across as a nice guy, but I could see how he could be manipulative, just from meeting him in the past.

Negreanu is a self serving worm. It's possible he was a good guy once upon a time.

the kind of bad guy masquerading as a good guy is much more dangerous than a blatantly bad guy.

No, he's "good at cards" and certainly top 1% of all live players playing in the world. The problem is that he thinks he is intelligent when he really is not in anything outside of cards. So glad he lost his Election bet because you can only imagine how he would be had he won (yes, worse than me).
