W/e, clearly I'm not going to convince anyone. Just throwing out my college experience to show that college isn't right for everyone.

Personally, I got very very little out of my curriculum and have easily learned way more from reading on my own. College was fun, but I certainly wouldn't go back if I was in Raptor's shoes simply to "learn."

Fluck, your seem to confusing two different things, you said

"College is for people who need a diploma and need a job. Most of college is dumbed down to make it passable for the 90% of unmotivated students that don't give a rat's ass about "knowledge."

Honestly, going to college to acquire knowledge is paying 40k a year to read books you can get for the price of a library card (sorry for the goodwilhunting reference)."

Which is what I replied to. The ascertain that all college is about is about a) getting a piece of paper and b) can be achieved by simply reading some books, is obviously complete horse s##t to the vast majority that have attended a top school.

What Raptor is going to get out of his choice of college, well that is up to him. I would guess given his poker winnings, the houses he owns, cash in the bank, simply reading some books to get a piece of paper, may not be the major reason for doing it.

So many stupid posts in this thread. Here are a couple that are good:

The simpleton looks at these responses and on the surface there is some truth in all of them......if you go half assedly through life that is.

The REALITY is this: these online guys, even the ones ITT, know the games are substantially and consistently drying up online. The ones without exit strategies have these comments to keep them feeling good, but also a sneaking suspicion things are going to be pretty rough in the next 12-36 months regardless of the UIGEA situation.

From the little I know about raptor he doesnt seem like the kinda guy I would hang out with or even like if pressed into contact with, but he is making a wise move at the right time here. Got to know when to quit.
Good luck David!

I'm in the sceptical camp. David probably doesn't realise how excrutiatingly boring attending classes, writing essays and studying for finals is. And I'm very interested in what I'm studying - business & economics. Still, if society didn't force me to get a degree, I wouldn't get one.

Of course, there's the social part of college, which is great. Poker players often live rather solitary lives, spending much time indoors behind their computers etc. In college, you're meeting a lot of interesting people, you're networking, partying, f*cking and binge drinking. It's just good times. In that respect, I can understand his move.

I also understand his desire to go and do something else. I mean, the kid's made it. He's rich. If I was in his position, I'd still be playing poker, but I'd devote a large part of my time to other things, such as travelling, networking, meeting people, charity, society, love. Things that make you happy. Live life. EZ game.

half the responses in this thread are proof that poker will be profitable for a long time to come.

GL to david. Obviously this isnt a monetary decision. Money is a utility and when you have enough of it its hard to imagine why you would continue to put yourself through daily torture.

Things like the pursuit of knowledge maybe? This may not apply to the vast majority of degens on this board, but some people actually enjoy learning. And please do be more cliche ("traveling", etc) rofl.

You're funny. I value knowledge very highly and like I said, I'm interested in what I'm studying and I enjoy learning. However, the desire to acquire knowledge alone isn't gonna be enough to get you through 4 years of university. Trust me, after the first 400 page book you read, marked, synthesised and reread, you're gonna feel much less devoted to "pursuing knowledge" with about 30-40 more of those to come. No matter how interested you thought you were.

Also wtf at travelling being a cliché. It's what I'd do 24/7 if I had 10 million in the bank. For the life of me I can't understand why you'd say something like that. Have you ever been outside of Nebraska?

This, maybe this board is just filled with super devoted academics, but do you people seriously love your studies this much?

Personally, I enjoy reading on my own time, learning about things that genuinely interest me at my own pace. If I was a solid winning poker player before I started college I would have never gone.

I didn't know underage girls went to college. Surely you can find a better picture than a bunch of 15 year old wannabe hoochies. The 2 on the left look like Zoolander for christ sake. I'll take the tongue touching sisters.

And for the record you don't quit poker, poker quits you!

Lmao at the idea of going back to college just for the girls. He's young and rich. If he needs to go to college to get pussy he obv has no game. I know he didn't say that was his reasoning but that is a dumbass argument imo.

I could give myself 3x the workload of any ivy league school. I could find some form of peer interaction on most subjects via forums on the internet to challenge myself just as far as any classroom discussion can.

You'd have to be very disciplined to do such a thing, but it's certainly possible.

actually the main purpose of a degree just shows employers that you can complete something from start to finish.

You obviously have never taken a difficult program...
At an elite, competitive university.

Hardcore programs like medicine, law, computer science...
Are designed to be almost ** sadistically difficult **...
In order to push a person intellectually...
To places where you could not possibly go alone...
Without the pressure cooker environment.

No one is born thinking like a doctor or lawyer.

The idea is to "brainwash you" into a system of thinking...
To PERMANENTLY change the way you think...
And this can only be done with brute force.

Since Raptor talks in the most general terms about "college"...
I doubt that he has a hardcore profession in mind...
And is therefore pretty much wasting his time...
And will end up a Poker Lifer.

Expect another "I'm quitting poker" missive in 12 months...
When he busts out of WSOP 2010.
