Darvin Moon: I like this guy

http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/...ast&id=4503474

i dont know if this has been posted or not. but this is a Darvin Moon interview on ESPN Radio by Andrew Feldman and Phil Gordon. I gotta say I like this Moon guy. he keeps it real!

Some Highlights:
- says he's been playing super tight and just been getting hit over by the deck
- works for a logging company that has 3 employees including his brother.
- Phil Gordon "How do you like how ESPN has been portraying you so far?"
Moon "I like it so far cause they haven't shown me yet."
- not hiring a coach. "i dont understand all that, im going in on my own same way i've been doing."
- was never all-in.
- always doubled or tripled his stack each day.
- knocked 27 ppl out.

Seems like he's gonna continue to play tight and won't be giving away his chips. I don't like his chances of winning though. He's gonna need a hot deck again to win it.

Yea he seems like a good laid back guy, and solid player. Wish him the best of luck during the final table, but rooting for ivey !

I like Moon as well, but I still am hoping for Ivey to come out on top.

Re: Darvin Moon: I like this guy

These false humility guys are really the biggest egomaniacs of them all. I think he said in an interview that 80% of the field played better than him. And if he does just play super tight ABC then that can't be true and he knows that it's not true. He secretly prides himself on behing the anti-Hellmuth while revealing in the fact that everyone is going on and on about his humility. Not all humilty is false however, I believe Jerry Yang is really what he appeared to be, but that is usually only brought about by fanatical religious belief.

Re: Darvin Moon: I like this guy

Darvin is obviously *not* being falsly humble. He's a good guy. He'd probably have trouble heads up if he just plays full ring tight, but he's probably going to finish 4th or higher.

hahaha A.C. Slater!!! I used to love that show. I don't agree w/you AC. I think Moon is 100% legit. The people who would portray a fake persona are not Darvin Moon type. Guys like Moon and Dennis Phillips are what they are. They also have that mid-west/ southern speak how you feel mentality. Also i met jerry yang and he's 100% too nice of a guy.

he's just a freakin' logger, dude. 2p2 goes on and on about how guys like Dennis Phillips, Jamie Gold, Tif Michelle let their success in a single donkament go to their heads and think that they must somehow be gifted. Then this Darvin guy comes along, admits he has next to no experience, shuns sponsors and final-table coaches, openly claims that he only made it far after being smashed by the deck and you deride him for false modesty; in short, he can't win either way. To this point I find absolutely nothing unlikable about him.

Did anyone else notice that at around 42:00, Darvin doesn't remember the Billy Kopp hand correctly and doesn't even realise that a full house had him beat on the turn? Did no one tell him?

Way to judge someone's character before you've even so much as seen him on TV.

So Yang was humble prior to the win? He certainly wasn't the following year where all he could do is talk about himself. "I the champ. I the champ. You should all be honored to get to play with the champ. Did I mention, I the champ?" - semi-accurate quotes.

As for Moon, the simple fact that he is a working class American makes me hate him. However, I don't know much about him and haven't watched his interviews, so I'll reserve full judgment.

I would tell him, but he doesn't want to hire a coach and that type of information costs $$$.

LMAO that he remembers the turn was 2h but thought that paired Kopp and not the board.

Crash Davis: "It's time to work on your interviews."
Nuke LaLoosh: "My interviews? What do I gotta do?"
Crash Davis: "You're gonna have to learn your clichés. You're gonna have to study them, you're gonna have to know them. They're your friends. Write this down: "We gotta play it one day at a time."
Nuke LaLoosh: "Got to play… it's pretty boring."
Crash Davis: "Course it's boring, that's the point. Write it down."

No, because Kopp mentioned that the board was paired. He said it didn't matter to him and that he didn't believe Moon would push with a boat.

Re: Darvin Moon: I like this guy

Saw him on the Inside Deal. You could kinda tell dude has zero interest in poker after the final table. He's probably annoyed more than anyone that he has to wait until November.

He's right about not hiring a coach though. If you can get to the November 9 on your own what is a coach really gonna do for you, it doesn't nothing but put another voice in your head.

Also he has no e-mail address, credit card, doesn't play online, and no plans for the money. I don't think Darvin Moon is a real person...

R U SEER-E-US?!? One shouldn't try to get every edge they can? He made the November 9....yah, so what? How good is he playing 6 handed? How good is he heads up? I guess because he made some donk plays and ran well that he doesn't need to improve his game.

He should accept the Durrrr challenge. He's ready.

Re: Darvin Moon: I like this guy

Seems like a legitimately good/humble guy. One of my least favorite things about poker is how everyone is a braggart about the money. Good job for him to have a level head.

Not hiring a coach, or a team of coaches for the ME FT = -EV. I hope he plays well and is happy with his performance.

Re: Darvin Moon: I like this guy

Darvin Moon is a genuine nice guy from what I have seen of him, and I believe good for poker. It's nice not to have an egomaniac, or soon to be egomaniac at the wheel for a drive once in a while. Someone not spewing poker cliches and wondering what to do based on +EV, table image, blather blather blather. Just some dude, a likable by all accounts dude, living the dream. Rock on Darvin Moon.

Haha... I just think it is funny that everyone tried to analyze this hand afterwards and Darvin didn't even know about the possible full house.... and still doesn't.

Re: Darvin Moon: I like this guy

On coaching:

I think hiring Rizen as a coach hurt Darus Suharto last year. You can hear all the concepts in the world, but if you don't truly understand them, you'll just misapply them when it comes game time.

I feel that Rizen forced Suharto out of his comfort zone, which resulted in the butchered hand against Demidov when Ivan flopped top set, and also the huge over shove w/A8o against Scott Montgomery's pf open. Had he just played his standard squeeky tight game, he probably woulda fared better.
