Isn't this the same situation with marijuana legalization? It's legal under state law but illegal under federal law.

It's similar, but one key difference is that the current administration has publicly stated (in a memo from the DOJ), that it has no interest in pursuing marijuana complaints against state-sanctioned users and dispensaries. So, while use and sale of marijuana remains illegal, the DOJ wants to use its limited law enforcement and prosecutorial resources elsewhere.

It has made no such statement about sports betting.

This is getting real. Dates are being set. "The leagues have two weeks to respond."

"U.S. District Judge Michael Shipp has set a hearing for Oct. 6. For now, operating a sports book at racetracks or casinos essentially does not violate New Jersey state law."

Dennis Drazin is an attorney and adviser to the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association.

"This week, Drazin sent letters to the leagues informing them Monmouth Park would wait 45 days before starting sports betting Oct. 25."

Quote:
"The Monmouth Park sportsbook will have a betting menu similar to what is offered at Nevada sportsbooks, with a few exceptions. Betting will not be allowed on any games involving Rutgers University or any collegiate games played in New Jersey. Bettors will be allowed to wager on professional teams that play in New Jersey, such as the New York Giants and the New Jersey Devils, Drazin said."
Week 8 of the NFL Schedule on October 26th.

+1 ,my thoughts exactly big worm, Colorado will be watching and if NJ goes for it I think we will follow suit here.

As an aside NJ voted on Sports betting back in 90's I think and the big Las Vegas casino money lined up to block it from happening then. This time the people of NJ voted and want sports betting. The feds will have a hard time shutting it down if the people of the state want it.

The bill to supposedly pave the way for sports betting in New Jersey has been signed.

Quote:
Dennis Drazin, an adviser to Monmouth Park Racetrack, said the park plans to begin taking sports bets on Oct. 26 but expects the leagues to seek a further court injunction.

Drazin said he expects the Oct. 26 date to be a “soft opening.”

Lesniak tweeted, “Christie signed my sports betting legislation see you at Monmouth Racetrack Oct 26.”
Getting interesting. See Post #29.

I think there are some in this thread that inadvertently think of NJ in terms of some company thumbing it's nose at the government.

That is not the case, New Jersey is a State and States have an enormous amount of power when it comes to doing what they want to do when their constituents want them to do it...

Normally, the way the Fed Gov keeps the states in line is by using federal money against them, basically saying, "Hey, if you don't toe the line we aren't giving you the federal money you need to do X Y and Z..."

but in this case, New Jersey is doing all this for money...

Anyways, my point is that if NJ is hell bent on doing this, they will find a legal way to do it and/or work out something between themselves and the Fed Gov. It's not like NJ is some company... No, NJ is a state, so they can bring a lot more to this fight than some corporation could...

Monmouth Park is real close to me but I would rather have poker in whole US any day. 581 players on 254 tables on Borgata. I wish all could play what BS.
