Re: Chris Moneymaker

What I want to know is what the hell happened to Sam Grizzle? He was featured in that 2003 main event against Helmuth and still in my opinion ranks right up there as 1 of the best episodes in televised poker. He was a great instigator. The sad part is I can't recall another episode with him in it again.

Wasn't that also the episode that Tony D(where did he go anyways) folded 3 Jacks against Helmuth?

Re: Chris Moneymaker

Last I saw Sam Grizzle he was playing in a $1100 Mid States Poker Tour event at Best Bet in Jacksonville his past February. Sam has never had any money and doesn't seem to be doing particularly well now. At the WPT in Jax last October he was hanging around telling friends that "someone ought to put me in this tourney."

I've heard him say all his live buyins are paid for by Pokerstars, so he's on a lifetime freeroll. He's playing on PSNJ because that's where Stars wants him to do marketing. He's still a very recognizable figure in the United States, more than someone like mojave or Lex Velhuis.
I don't know how true this is. He had 50% of himself in the ME, so only 1.25 mill. I listened to a podcast -- maybe it was with Mike Sexton? Some old school guy. Anyways, Chris was playing $10k HU sngs at Binions or the Nuggets pretty soon after his win against old school pros while getting wasted. That's the only story I know, but surely there was more degening (he also spent $30k or so at a strip club after his win, where Devil Fish had to come bail him out because he didn't have the cash).

I'm sure the Stars sponsorship has helped bankroll him yearly to where he does fine, especially making up for the fact his Hendon Mob is pretty poor giving all the tournaments he must have played since 2004. But good chance he wasn't financially wise.

Played at the Horseshoe Wednesday night. Every time I get to Tunica, everything is a little bit more sad than the time before, including poker. When I came the first time >5 years ago, the Goldstrike felt like a luxury hotel. Now they don't even put in the effort to oil the squeaking room doors and have no fresh bread or waffles and no fresh fruit except for melon and pineapple at the breakfast buffet. (Ate ~3k calories anyway and still feel stuffed 26 hours later).

Even if he only had $1.25M, with a few decent financial moves, that can still leave someone relatively comfortable. The reality is that MOST people don't NEED more than a few thousand a month to get by in a modicum of comfort (assuming 40 year distribution plans, that amount even without interest and dividends would put him in decent shape). And unless he just completely walked away from his daytime skillset, you have to be able to presume there is money coming in from the accounting work...even if only the occasional $3-4K per month, that wouldn't be 'hurting' by any stretch of the imagination.

K, so this actually is a decent post right up until I saw this:

Wut?

I mean don't get me wrong, I like Dutch, he is a hell of a player, but in 2003 standards, he's not in the same class as the others you listed, not at all.

Why did he only have 50% of himself in the main event if he satellited in?

He sold half the seat for $5k. In actuality, he wasn't interested in playing at all and wanted to sell the entire seat for $10k and just walk away with the cash, but his friend convinced him to play and offered him $5k for 50% of whatever Chris ended up winning.

This is what I was looking for. Since you have so many posts I know I should just take your word for it, but can anyone else confirm?

Still, his run was great. Loved the aggression...that call with a small pair against Boyd for his tournament life was amazing.

Sam has been doing this for the last 40 or whatever years. I mean somehow its amazing to never have to work to feed/house yourself, play cards everyday yet "never have any money".
