Chivas signs Pokerstars.net as sponsor

There was a press conference in Guadalajara today to announce PokerStars as a new sponsor for CD Chivas. It looks like Stars is going to be making a huge marketing push in Mexico. Here are some links to stories I found through Google:

http://www.cronica.com.mx/nota.php?id_nota=428053

and that aricle translated to English:

http://translate.google.com/translat...53&sl=es&tl=en

and here's the official aricle from Chivas' website

http://www.chivascampeon.com/noticia/6435/

translated:

http://translate.google.com/translat...2F&sl=es&tl=en

I also found three new PokerStars commercials on YouTube featuring three of Chivas' star players. I'm not exactly sure what is being said but they look really well put together and should help to promote poker in Mexico in a positive light.

Oh boy, Pokerstars holding tournaments in Mexico. I am sure there will not be any hesitation to sign up. Makes me remember this old thread: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/29...nceled-358738/

Re: Chivas signs Pokerstars.net as sponsor

It's not necessarily the first time a gambling company has sponsored a team in Mexican futbol.

My adopted home team, the Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles, is owned by Caliente, a gambling company owned by the Mayor of Tijuana. Caliente owns and operates many sportsbooks in Mexico, as well as a greyhound track.

There was originally some discussion that would prevent Caliente from owning the team, which plays in Division "A", which is below the the Primera League, but it was decided that since they didn't accept wagers on Division "A" games that it would be allowed.

The Xolos are currently atop Division "A" and are serious contenders for promotion, but that's a story for a different forum.
