re: Charity poker tournament scam Alfred Jack Walls Now with Reraisepokertour.com cliffs in OP

U.C.A.R.E. spent $46,000 on tee shirts? That would prolly be about 10,000 shirts, right? I mean I've bought wholesale shirts before. $46,000 has to be a minimum of 10,000 shirts, I think. Wow. (This prolly isn't a very good contribution to the thread. I'm just wowed that a "new" charity would have the resources and need for 10K shirts.)

My sister died of a brain tumor and my mother survived breast cancer only to end up with kidney cancer 15 years later. There is definitely a need for what U.C.A.R.E. claims to be delivering, even if the max gift is $1000. But from what I've read ITT, U.C.A.R.E. is disgusting as far as money managment goes, and I would never contribute to them.

A charity that only uses 21% of their incoming monies for the benefit of the clients isn't a charity. It's closer to money laundering than charity, IMO. It's an excuse to give somebody a paycheck. An elderly friend of mine runs her own small non-profit. 100% of the donations go to her clients. That's rare, but 21% is criminal IMO.

Here are Jack Walls' favorite quotes as listed on his facebook page. (Remember what you read earlier -- that the projected budget for 2011 was half a million dollars in salaries.)

"All the decisions of my life are based on satisfying three primary functions: fun, freedom, and fulfillment. Poker is a blend of them all!!!!"

"You get a guy that doesn't like schedules, bosses, or work, and you get a poker player!!!"

(Since they are not attributed to anyone, I'm assuming they are his own words.)

Even if U.C.A.R.E. is a legitimate NPO, it's so poorly run that the poker community should be running away from it -- and fast!

In my humble opinion.

What was so different that you finally saw the light? Same thing StinkySchnitz has been telling you for pages now.

Why do people keep mentioning my name and something about an escrow?

They want to pool $$ to donate to a legit charity. I think they want you to handle it for them.

Thanks DRybes. I understand how easy it is to get tangled in something like this with no way out. Extracting yourself at this point shows character and prevents you from suffering backlash if it gets ugly. I feel like the only reason you'd continue to defend beyond this point is if there's some hidden connection between you and UCARE. So it'd be wise to take a break either way and avoid suspicion.

Lawyer types, is it really possible to sue an internet forum for slander, or is this just a smokescreen to avoid responding to the accusations.

All signs are pointing to this all being a scam for sure.

Someone wanted to know about the Board of Directors? This is from the 2009 application that was denied. There are a few other docs available about projections, method of collecting etc that may be useful. Nowhere does it mention poker at all on here, or the guidestar mission, yet that seems to be their primary source of income.

President - Alfred L. Walls III (Jack)
Treasurer - Amy Wu
Secretary - Sandra Zandrowicz
General Member - Finnesa Gardner
General Member - Amelia Katie Huckaby
General Member - Alexis Moose
General Member - Amanda Jo Clark
General Member - Tracey Lovito

It also shows addresses but they don't need to be posted.

Chainsaw - in the UK there have recently been cases of defamation on anonymous forums but it's rare, heavily contested and just isn't going to happen here.

Looking at the photos I don't see anybody modeling T-shirts, so I'm not sure where they ended up. Even if there were 3000 sold that's still over $50.00 each. FYI Bust out poker T-shirts sell to the average shopper for between $19.95 and $49.00 on their web store. Not sure if that is relevant or not but from a cost comparison it is interesting. Seems like they are in the apparel business rather than the business of charity.
From the Melanie Payne article, "Another point Walls addressed was that I said Publix did not give permission for UCARE to solicit donations outside of their stores. This is true. I think Walls misunderstood the Publix policy. Getting permission from the store manager was only the first step. The group also needed approval from the corporate office. It had to submit financial and insurance information. UCARE didn't do that. I had also written that UCARE was not registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, as charities that solicit from the public need to be."

I think most of their t-shirt sales occur at booths setup outside grocery stores, not at poker tournaments.

Can you imagine him telling a judge that he welched on charity prizes and impersonated the parent of a cancer victim, then people on the forum started calling him a scumbag so he's seeking damages?

Approaching 3 days on this forum without a form 990 being produced, and a couple of months since the reporter asked for it to be produced.

That sequestered jury the accountant has been stuck on for months must be really pissed off and missing their families by now.

In the short stacked interview he said they sell bustout t-shirts at the tournaments and 20% goes to UCARE.

The t-shirts are probably a secondary issue, but I imagine they are the "Donkey Farm Poker Klub" (ugh) t-shirts sold on the website for $15.

http://www.ucareamerica.org/#!buy/productscarousel0=3

The site says "outside vendor" and that $2 of the $15 goes to UCARE. I'm not sure if these are Bustout shirts, or shirts that were independently made and he has in inventory. Selling shirts at a markup isn't improper -- it's what happens to the proceeds that's key.
