So yeah, I think more than 5000 people turned in just to hear them talk strat. Myself included. I wasn't there to watch the douche whale vs female liberal tournament pro.
Plus, Cate wasn't even talking during the match. Dentale kept trying, but she wouldn't engage. She wouldn't even answer how she prefers to be addressed, Cate vs Caitlyn.
Also, match was pretty bad. Dentale can talk trash, but can't play cards. HU or full ring, since he clowned around in the PNIA cash game too.
Come on, you're joking, right?
This match got the huge live audience it did because of the intrigue of the grudge match between two opposite (and obnoxious) personalities.
As I said, put Polk and Deeb commentating on a heads up match between two good players with ordinary personalities, and they don't get anywhere near this kind of viewership.
You're correct in your assessment of the match. Dentale sucked at the heads up pokers, while Cate was good at poker but quiet and boring. I agree this made Polk and Deeb's job harder, but at the same time, they needed to STFU when we got the few table talk nuggets that we did.
At the beginning, they promised to go quiet when Hall and Dentale talked, but then abandoned that promise as the match wore on, finally resulting in the head-scratching decision to talk over the postgame banter right when Dentale busted.
Regarding the lack of interviews, I was pretty surprised about that, myself.
Clearly there were some mistakes on the production end, but this was new territory for Poker Night in America, so hopefully these are just growing pains and we will see those issues corrected next time. Matt Glantz already said they will disallow cell phone usage in the next grudge match, regardless of who is featured.
