IIRC, that blog post was more of a joke. I've never been close to busto in my poker career. I've always been really in control wrt bankroll management, almost to a fault. Near busto at the time probably meant I lost 5% or less of my roll the previous month. Whenever I started to do bad in poker, I'd just move down in stakes; that way if I was actually playing bad I'd minimize my losses.
I'm not sure what is necessary to beat midstakes games now, as I'm pretty out of touch with the games. I'd field that question to the medium stakes NL forum.
