People with poor fundamentals can win live because live is a lot softer, not because it's so much more complex. Way more fish, bigger fish, and regs on average much weaker. Also, "good instincts" is not a real thing, only fish and bad regs believe in that kind of stuff. People who think they have "good instincts" usually just ran well guessing right more often than not, or perhaps just selectively remembering the times they guessed correctly.
