Suspicions would no doubt more likely lie with those players making a deep run, or at least those starting each new day among the chip leaders. One strategy for a scammer with counterfeit chips would be to introduce them gradually during the day- one at a time exchanging them for the real chips from his stack. This allows the fake chips to become diluted amongst other players and builds a resevoir of real chips in the scammer's pocket without any visible sudden increases in his chip stack. Then, at the end of the day, he simply adds all the extra chips he's collected when bagging up his chips. If he happened to have busted before the end of the day then those extra chips would be passed to an accomplice who was still in. Hence, new day chip leaders would probably be a good place to start looking.
I'm not a live tournament player so these are just my rambling thoughts. Are there cameras in these rooms? If so, then would it be possible to focus on the top X chip leaders at the start of day two and go through video footage for possible evidence of passing chips to/from the table?
