Re: The Big Razz Game: 1959. Johnny Moss versus Sarge Ferris
I forgot my best story about Sand. Sand was a friend of Benny Binion, but he was fading craps with Cat Noble, Benny's sworn enemy in Dallas. He was called Cat because he had nine lives. Benny tried to have him killed over and over. His wife was killed in a bomb at the mail box. Cat was made insane by all this. He rigged a plane with bombs and was going to bomb Benny's house in Las Vegas. The Mafia guys were asking Benny to chill out because of all the bad publicity it got.
Sand would cut up the bankroll every night because he was afraid Cat would be killed. Finally, he was.
Benny Binion was the boss gambler around Fort Worth and Dallas. He had dice games, bookmaking, and policy wheels. When he moved to Vegas to buy in to half a casino in a small town, he took a real step down from Dallas, but the reformer political climate made it time to leave Texas. Benny coulnd't come back because of warrants.

Not sure about 59 (wasent born yet) but some are still around, about 5 years ago i was in a convent store when 2 cabs pull up to get gas a family of "asian" folks get out and go into the store bying hot dogs ect. seems the one collage age kid spoke english and traslated to the old guy what the cashier was saying he went to pay and opend up his billfold and there was a wad of 1000 dollar bills. When they left me and the guy behind the counter were like WTF !
Just wonder if maybe these abills are still used overseas?

Re: The Big Razz Game: 1959. Johnny Moss versus Sarge Ferris
musedO1, you are exactly right. These characters lives would make great movies. The three most fascinating gamblers whose lives would make the best movies are:
Titanic Thompson, Benny Binion, and Johnny Moss. Of course, any movie about one would involve the others since they were pals, and associates. and life-long friends.
To show the power of TwoPlusTwo, when I posted on here about Titanic Thompson, his son, Preacher Tommy Thomas, posted and we exchanged emails. There have been discussions and attempts at a movie from Stower's definative biography of Titanic, but there were legal constraints.
A newish book on Benny Binion, Sleeper's I'll Do My Own Damn Killing. shows that Benny in Dallas was so fascinating, and larger than life, that it is hard to believe. This book is taken from police records, much of which are gossip. However, a long list of Texas police characters plotted to kill Cat Noble at one time or another.
Titanic killed five men in self defense.
Benny Binion killed two men, supposedly in self defense.
Johnny Moss shot a man, but never knew whether he killed him or not. He did not wait around to find out.
Like these guys, Sand was a crack shot, and practiced with pistols all the time. Titanic bet on his marksmanship.
When somebody tried to rob him, Titanic would fake a heat attack, and come up shooting.
Doyle Brunson learned that from Ti, and faked a heart attack when robbers came for him.
