Well, got some news for you all: Online poker is shady. From collusion among players yakking on aim while playing each other to pro's playing on their assistant's accounts to insiders at the websites watching the games and seeing all the hole cards. Anyone who thinks just logging onto Full Tilt and jumping into some random game without worrying about the fix being on somehow is just delusional.
That doesn't mean all publicity is beneficial to the cause. I'm sure most people want the AP/UB cheaters brought to justice, and for their to be more done to stop scammers, but 60 minutes are most likely going to use this as a platform to smear internet poker and make it appear shady in areas where it's legitimate. I doubt they care very much about users getting their money back (or showing that so many people were victimised by this) or that the previous(!) owners get brought up on charges.

Respectfully I say "fail".

Live games are legal in many states, including mine. However, I'm not allowed to set up a home game and "accept deposits".

"Poker cheaters swindle 20 million and got away with it"

The pitch just a moment ago of a 10 second promo during Lions-Titans game:

"A great poker swindle; how some players stole $20 million and got away with it."

Re: How CBS is advertising the 60 minutes story

I just heard that too. Although Phelps will say how much he is loving poker and America love Phelps, so lets hope that this will sway everyone to accept poker.

Nonsensical dribble. The Government needs your money to bail out failing corporations.

So the player is never doing anything wrong, but the 3rd party company that gets the money from a poker site to my U.S. bank account is breaking the law...so the politicians are going after the 3rd party company...not the player.
This is nicely phrased, we need to push this message.

Nat Arem was forwarded a copy of a memo Paul Leggett sent to employees regarding the 60 Minutes story, which he posted here.

Re: 60 Minutes Poker story this Sunday!

I couldn't help myself. Had to try to post this (though it didn't post yet...will keep trying):

Firstly the fact 60 Minutes begins their story with a sentence that is incorrect, "this 18 billion a year industry is illegal in the US" is very disheartening. Come on 60 Minutes, do some fact checking. That is a MAJOR error that makes your reporting not seem objective.

Secondly, to the people commenting saying that poker is a game of luck, do you also go to Wall Street and tell all the day traders that the stock market is a game of luck? Poker and the stock market are very similar: luck is a part of it, there are swings, but a smart player in the game wins money over the long haul. The fact that sometimes bad players win, is in itself an admittance that there are good players and bad players, therefore it is a game of skill.

If I were to offer you coin flips at $100 a pop with a coin weighted to land heads 55% of the time (for the sake of the argument lets say you can confirm the validity of this), for as many flips as you want and you can have heads, you would take this wager right? Even though you MIGHT be down after 100 flips, 500 flips, heck even 1000 flips. Well, being a knowledgeable poker player is much like this. Sometimes you lose those flips, but the weighted coin affords you a positive expectation in the long run -- which, through patience and discipline, eventually becomes realized.

schneids, did you lose money/were you refunded from UB? just asking.

i could go on and on about the similarities between finance/trading and poker, having now worked in finance for a year i can assure you having a solid understanding of poker theory, risk-weighted decision making, and variance would aid you in trading/business, etc.

also, one of the best arguments that i've heard for why poker is a game of skill is that, if you wanted to, it would be possible to lose a lot of money very quickly playing. i always liked that argument.
