"As a young girl, Alicia "Ace" Anderson (Swain) had been taught the fine art and the mathematical probabilities of Texas Hold-em poker by the father she adored. But that world came to an end when her father was taken from her in a fatal auto accident. Years later, as she enters medical school, she will need to call upon the skills her father taught her as she struggles with the rigorous medical training, mounting financial pressures and the seamier side of medicine. Her friends and fellow students combine their unique talents and skills to produce a team who may well be the ultimate poker machine. But as the stakes in both the casinos and the operating room continue to rise, Ace comes to understand what her father taught her: in order to really live, you need to go all in"
I like the parts of Lucky You that are filmed at the B (the big game, the room, etc) but the rest of the movie sucks specially because it shows that poker players are degens.
yeah when i first saw rounders in the movie theater way back when, i liked it. watched it again pretty recently, and realized it's pretty cheesy and bad, but it's a masterpiece compared to some of the others.
The Cincinnati Kid with Steve McQueen and Edward G Robinson. The last hand, straight flush vs full house is pretty phoney, but the movie itself is great.
Another great poker movie was "A Big Hand for the Little Lady".
I think the Tilt series gets to count in the poker-movie category too because it's not like there are other fictitious TV series about poker for it to compete against...unless you count the WPT of course!! ha ha.
Tilt was 9 episodes which I think were an hour each but after taking away commercials and previewing the next week's episode, etc I'm thinking they were more like 48 minutes of actual footage. Not sure.
So if you look at the DVD thing of it as a hideous and lengthy 7 hour film I think it is way up there as worst of all-time just for the sheer torture of watching it.
Granted, I couldn't even make it past the first 10-15 minutes of All In because it was just so bad. But lets include Tilt here and give it its due props for being as awful as it was.
The Stu Ungar Story was a great movie, I thought. Michael Imperioli does an amazing job of capturing the Ungar character. Seriously, a very well-written movie with Ungar essentially dancing with the grim reaper and recapping his amazing swongs.
All In --1 out of 10
One of a Kind --1 out of 10
(both are nearly unwatchable)
Lucky You -- 6 out of 10 (watchable, not bad)
Shade -- 5 out of 10 (watchable)
