Pretty much this.

yes it appears that way as referenced in other articles even though the last names seem to be spelled differently based on the indictment.

Totally agree with Homer on this. The Russian Jew Mafia is bad news capish? I disagree with most of what the U.S. gov't does but this is not on the list. If Al Capone's poker game was busted would you say 'damn gubmint'?

I have no idea if that's his Dad but Ilya Trincher is long-time friends with Eugene Katchalov. Eugene was staked by Ilya at the outset of his poker career. Ilya and his mob boss father Vadim both appeared on HSP back in the day.

re: The Trincher Family, Abe Mosseri, Justin "Boosted J" Smith, John Hanson in Fed Sting

I would tentatively guess that what these poker players did is done is every poker room in America in much the same way. And while it is illegal it does seem unfair that just because the Russian mafia is running it they get caught up in a massive sting. I mean this type of operation happens just out in the open everywhere I have played poker, with guys making bets and doing transactions at the table and openly talking about it, giving out their websites and everything.

Then again the poker players like Abe and Justin might have been introducing poker players to Russian mafia guys without those poker player's knowledge. I doubt Justin Smith says "I know a guy who can take all your action. He's in the Russian mob. Is that OK with you?".

1) do you also think that someone should go to jail for jaywalking if they are thought to have committed other more serious crimes? it's ridiculous to think it's alright for someone to go to jail for something that shouldn't even be illegal just because you think they are involved in organized crime.
2) how exactly are they going to launder money from russia by participating in an underground live poker game in the united states? describe at least one plausible scenario.

They did get Capone on tax evasion... sometimes you take whatever you can get.

the indictment describes offshore money laundering facilities. They weren't doing it by way of the poker games.

Remember when FT was shut down and they had no money to pay anyone? A big part of that was because they were unregulated. What does unregulated mean for these guys? It means that when you play on credit and don't pay Oleg shows up at your door with a crowbar. Booking sports bets is a pretty serious crime, as well. It's not like there is anyone who thinks it's not a big deal - the FBI has been going after certain offshore bookmakers hard in the last few years. If these guys had been running a underground casino I'm sure there would be a lot less sympathy here for them - but the odds in the poker game are worse, for some. This is basically the textbook definition of organized crime. Besides, the sports betting is the real thing here.

Most of the poker players were probably arrested to scare them and get them to testify against the big guys. If they have proof of Boosted J acting as an intermediary booking sports bets, he's probably going to have to put up some serious information or face some stiff penalties. I don't envy any of these guys - but they were making a ton of money while it was good. Let's just say the guys at the top aren't getting a federal indictment for raking $200/hr on a little underground game.

i hope you realize that the only reason the russian mafia can prosper in the US is because gambling/prostitution/drugs are illegal. so basically the fbi/dea is responsible for the russian mob even existing here.

good thing we got capone though since he sold alcohol.

A sore loser might whistle blow and think this way but rest assured he would still be liable to pay the money if the Russian mob are involved, since when are debts just cancelled because the police arrest a few people.

Wow, almost 100 replies and no one is even curious if they nabbed Teddy KGB's joint as part of this whole thing?

Probably started the whole investigation imo
One of the other articles mentions that "they" took over the Bronx plumbing company when the owner couldn't pay his gambling debts. Reminds me of a Sopranos episode.

Years ago (2005/2006) I remember there being a whale named Joe The Plumber that the high stakes games at Borgota where built around (500/1000 limit hold em when I was there)

No.

FBI and DEA are not the ones making the laws. But they have to enforce them.

But I agree with you. If drugs and gambling were legal then the organized crime would lose a huge part of their income.
