The authorities say the games were an offshoot of a massive money-laundering scheme.

They forgot to include the child porn, drug smuggling, and terrorism accusations.

People might be surprised how many businesses are fake and used only for money laundering.. in fact, things like that neighborhood laundromat.
Wherever cash comes in and is unaccounted for can be used. Just claim the washing machines took in 3 or 4 times what they actually did.

But it makes no sense to me why they would use an illegal affair to launder money. Is the mob claiming their poker room took in twice the money it actually did, and thus hiding some of their income from heroin sales?

You are correct. It does not make sense to launder illegal money through an illegal poker game.

They changed the definition of money laundering several years ago so they could be hyper-dramatic when describing a crime. Basically any crime where the criminal obtains cash becomes money laundering as soon as they buy anything with it.
