If I was LVPD, it seems like it would've been really easy to do a sting; a Nanny cam, and 3 obvious looking poker hi rollers checking into a room.

If Caesars/Harrahs gave a ****, they could've EASILY done that.

They could still set it up for the main event, but the bad guys have probably moved on.
But if it's Rio employees, they'll do it again and it would be easy to catch them.
For the longest period of time, they were trying to sell the Rio in order to raise cash to finance their debts. Apparently they've moved on from that, so they might actually put some cash back into the place. (Think the pavilion room actually has new carpet this year)

35k takes up a lot of real estate if you plan on putting it in your pockets. Barely manageable with regular jeans let alone skinny jeans. Always possible to switch to chips, but the pain with using chips is if you bounce to other casinos they might not always honor Rio chips.

In the past sure, but most Vegas casinos are adopting the airline model of tacking on additional fees to offset declines in gaming revenue while making their rooms seem cheaper. Perfect example, Harrahs/Ceasar's promised via a marketing campaign to never do resort fees when they started a few years back.... Now? Every property has a resort fee.

It sucks, but just the reality of the marketplace. From what I remember last year at the Rio I don't even think my safe was bolted to the ground.

I'd be curious to know how often the Rio rotates our the maid's master keys. How often are they changed? Are employees issued new master keys when there is turnover and the maid fails to return their keys and so on.

I like this idea but thieves would be in and out before you even got close to your room.

I think that someone selling raid insecticide bombs could make a pretty penny at the Rio.

Good point.

I don't even know that it would be enough time if you are in the casino proper. You would need to race over to security and perhaps they could do something. But even waiting at bottom of elevator, how would you even know who did this. It would probably be illegal to frisk someone with very little suspicious.

Need cameras in corridors, but, as that one article stated, that opens a can of other liability if something does happen and the hotel doesn't do anything.

The RIO has in-room safes. There is no charge to use them. They are large enough for an iPad and notebook computer. You can never leave cash or computers out in the room. Anyone who travels should know better. The safes can be opened electronically but I don't think one person has access. It probably requires two individuals. I'm sure the computer records when it is being done so this wouldn't be the case where someone has access with no trace of the procedure. Nothing's perfect but leaving money in a bag is extremely dumb. Housekeeping comes in the room in the evenings to turn the beds down.

You are wrong about the safes being free. They cost some amount per day. I remember this from last time I was there. I think if you were some high level of their rewards program you got safe use for free

Between $1-$100 theft, small jail time and a fine.

Between $101-$1000, chop off a finger.

$1000 and up, take off the hand. Works in places where it is applied. I have zero tolerance for thieves and scumbags. *** em all.

I've stayed at the Rio each of the last four years for the WSOP, and the room safe was always free. Is this a recent change?

I was there in 2012 or 2011 and they had a charge. I remember it clearly since I was very pissed about it and tweeted about it and the hotel twitter people responded to me.

I'm not buying that. I've had 80,000 in hundreds in my 4 pockets one time when I was on a good run. Clearly you can fit 35,000.

I guess I'll be the guy carrying around all his money and laptop at all times... And tearing apart my bed checking for bugs before I even consider laying down.

If there's really a law against cameras in the hallways, it's the most ridiculous one I've ever heard of and needs to be fixed ASAP.

Is there a chance you didn't realize that there was a charge for the safe and it was just added to your bill at checkout?

Electronic "keys" are inherently insecure. When you match commercially available software against a world full of hackers, the hackers are going to find an exploit every time.

Sure, but was it practical? What about your wallet, keys, cell phone and what not? I'd find it hard to believe you could fit more than 35k in bills in one pocket.

I suppose you can always do a small backpack or satchel, but I've seen numerous people leave those behind at the table after taking a beat and storming off.

It's not like the world's largest hacker conference is held at the Rio a few weeks after the WSOP.... Oh wait.

On a slightly different note. If anyone here is using TrueCrypt to encrypt their laptop in the event of theft... It'd be a smart time to look into finding a new encryption solution. (Google it for more info)

To each their own. That being said, it's unfortunate that so many rooms get broken into in Vegas in general.
