I was listening to the pokercast, and Alec Torelli was talking about how he no longer enjoyed poker, and that the lows were 2.5x worse than the highs were good.
I think he is right.
How do you think about poker? I know many of you are probably play for a living and do you think that poker makes you depressed?
Its just that i noticed how i used to play poker just for fun,but in a way, more recently it has become less fun.
And also is playing poker for a living really as bad as people say?
Given prospect theory and loss aversion...about 2x is exactly right on how we take losses vs wins. I've been depressed from running bad (but there were other factors that added to that). Now, I enjoy poker again. It's still a job and a grind...but it's more fun again.
I really dont enjoy it anymore and hardly ever play anymore. I still enjoy watching poker played at high levels but grinding nl100 and nl200 for hours a day is painfully boring. Boredom leads to tilting amazingly quick these days and of course that means losing. Used to see poker as about half of my income now im in school and glad poker is no longer something i factor into my expendible income.
I hit the point where I HATED playing poker and could never get myself to play anymore and then I decided to get a real job and give that a try. Having a real job blows. Makes me dream of the days when i would sleep until 3 and then play all night.
If you are sick of poker take like a month off. Should help.

I probably feel more irritation when I drop 5 buyins than when I win 5 buyins. It comes from a general expectation to win money and also I usually make some really poor decision somewhere when losing 5 buyins. Overall, this is managable and not really a big factor either way.
What bugs me most about playing poker is that I have lost the sense of money's worth. I don't think it is healthy and force myself to think about how much money it is and not how many buyins it is. When I used to do that it led to stupid spending habits.

this has been the major problem that i have faced because of poker but i still love the game
I think those that say playing poker beats a 9-5 job are those that can't/won't get a decent job. If you are talking about working at WalMart or McDonalds, of course. But if you are talking about getting a college-educated decent income salaried position with healthcare benefits, you are so wrong. Poker turns into a grind. And kills your social life and the natural maturation process. Players find this out on their own, because nobody can tell them.
I'm in a bad period atm, but I still enjoy it. My BR is stable and I make ok cash. Nothing fantastic, but my game improves a lot every week. Just to think that 4 months ago I could read a board and knew about hand strength and now I have evolved to this extremelly evil player that just kills people.

I enjoy having noone to boss me around. I'm my own boss. That's really something I value above like everything else. I've had a regular job, it sucked. I had an idiot boss with dick complex and it was just horrible.
Never again will I go back to making money for anyone else but myself. I think that outweighs everything.
I'm actually happy that the some of the good pros are actually feeling burnt out and having second thoughts about playing. Let them go. We can have the fish to ourselves after they leave.

Playing for a living like any job has its ups and downs. Its all about confidence and variance. If you are confident in your abilitys and understand variance, then it won't be as bad as alot of people make it about to me. And by confidence I mean having the confidence to still know your good at what your doing after a couple months of negative variance. Playing the same game can get boring and dull over a very short time, so I try to learn and become good in a couple areas in poker. That learning experience is the fun part for me, also winning =)
