Still Enjoying Poker? Still Enjoying Poker?

I was listening to the pokercast, and Alec Torelli was talking about how he no longer enjoyed poker, and that the lows were 2.5x worse than the highs were good.

I think he is right.

How do you think about poker? I know many of you are probably play for a living and do you think that poker makes you depressed?

Its just that i noticed how i used to play poker just for fun,but in a way, more recently it has become less fun.

And also is playing poker for a living really as bad as people say?

i enjoy it. i just play what i feel like playing, right now i am playing a lot of live poker and also some PLO. I also almost never "force" myself to play. I just play when i feel like it.

i don't really enjoy it.

no reason to be depressed though.

it is just a job. most people dont love their job. right now grinding is the best combo of pay, freedom etc.

but the people who say "wow i love poker. would be great to do it full time." are fairly wrong.

i just grind sngs pretty brainlessly so maybe people who play differently enjoy it more.

in summary don't enjoy it. i treat it like a job. but fairly satisfied with it right now.

Nope.

Can't remember the day or week or month when the joy disappeared, but it was ages ago even though I've only played like two years or so.

yeah id say after truely grinding for more than a month you get sick of it and it gets rly mentally draining. I remember the drive I had to play poker instead of going to class but I dont get that anymore thankfully.

More of an obligation than fun. Same as any 9-5 job except there's no random hot chicks walking around the office.

im having possibly the best month ever since i went "pro" and im really bored and could care less. poker def feels more like a job than it did 6 months ago and it can be boring. but then i think about getting up at 8am to work some pointless job for 8 hours with a bunch of morons and its obviously better than that

its a job..... better than working for some Ahole that tells you what to do all the time for $15 an hour! what would you rather do? Get a real job and then tell me if you are not happy with poker anymore.

I suggest buying yourself something nice if you aren't enjoying poker currently.

Yes. I also never play more than 30k hands in a month though really and often less, and I only play when I want to and take a bunch of days off. If I put myself on a schedule where I had to grind 4 hours a day I'd get sick of it pretty fast I think.

Low stakes, net grinding must be so lonely if you want to make it your primary source of income. I'm a NLH player primarily and have always enjoyed the game but admittedly after long sessions day in, day out it can get a little tedious. I try to break up the monotony of grinding by playing mixed games when i'm getting tired of holdem. Stars 8 gamne is great for this cos the game changes every six hands so you're constantly swapping and changing. I also try to play at least twice but up 4 or 5 times a week live. Theres easier money to be made plus online is missing the banter of live play.

still enjoy it more than i would working a 9-5 some place else. (unless i'd stumble upon a dream job...but i don't even know what that would entail...)

however, even though it's nice that i can take a day off (or a week off) whenever i please, i still hafta put in the hours eventually, or my salary just gets cut.

Also..., i wonder just how much longer online poker's going to be as profitable as it is now(it's not nearly as profitable as it was last year...or the year before)...i don't really like the idea of making less and less as time goes on.

No. Not in the slightest bit. I thought being an 80% favorite meant winning 4/5 times not losing 20/20.
