Korea, not Japan. But this is correct. South Park has its own render farm for animation. The other shows mentioned use an outfit called Rough Draft Studios, which started in Van Nuys, Calif. but moved to Seoul. If you ever listen to the commentary track on the Family Guy DVD sets, you've heard MacFarlane and crew discuss the pros and cons of the Korean animators.

According to Rough Draft's own website, the company moved to what is now a 30,000 sq. foot HQ in Glendale, Calif. back in 1995. The Korean plant continues to operate as Rough Draft Korea. I'm not totally sure why Family Guy et al continue to farm out to Seoul. I can only assume it's a matter of expense: the Glendale studio seems to specialize in shorter material. So I imagine it's more cost-effective for longer forms of animation to go through the Far East.

Bleah, count me among those who consider post-Season 9 Simpsons to be a mere shadow of its old self (although until reading this thread I had never pinned it down to an exact season... very interesting). That said, I'll certainly watch this episode, if nothing else but for the curiosity of it.

This, during it's glory years it was one of the best tv shows of all time. It needs to go, it's just an absolute embarassment these days.

Completely correct, show was hitting it's stride in the first season or two, 3-10 were absolutely awesome, 11-15'ish were ok but noticably not as good, and everything since then has just been crap, getting worse every year. (the season ranges aren't set in stone but this gives a general idea)

That is definitely one of the biggest problems.

I've never met a big Simpsons fan who didn't agree that seasons 2/3 - 9/10 (roughly) weren't their best. Are there really people out there who think some other period represents the best of the Simpsons?

This isn't nostalgia talking here... i know opinions are subjective, but the show is crap now, we aren't all imagining it. But seriously what do you expect, none of the writers who were involved in their glory years are there, there's been tremendous turnover, over and over again.

The show is ridiculously lazy now, guest stars every week, slapstick humor, what were once characters are now caricatures of caricatures.

If anyone hasn't seen it yet, watch the 1 hour special on the behind the scenes making of a South Park episode. It was pretty amazing how quickly they can put together a show.

I guess you could say the "Reverse Cowgirl" episode was about how to sit on a toilet, not our privacy and the TSA.

Pointing out that The Simpsons isn't as funny as it used to be is not fanboyism, it's merely remarking on an objective reality.

Exactly. I mean, ultimately taste is subjective. I'm sure there are people out there who think Godfather 3 was by far the best Godfather movie, just like there are those folk out there who think the current Simpsons is actually funny. To each their own, still can't deny what the consensus opinion is though.

They make suggestions. Writers write.

I mean we all know Simpsons' fans worldwide have been clamoring for an online poker episode, and South Park fans have been dying to see an episode on the life cycle of jewelery gold and how we need to accept the TSA. Haha those writers, they sure know how to give the people exactly what they want to see.

Remember when South Park episodes weren't about the weekly news? Before they got their $75 million? The Simpsons has become much more political too, and that's why this upcoming episode is so key. It will redefine online poker's public image.

so matt stone and trey parker, the writers of south park, who showed up at the oscars in dresses and on LSD, are dutifully taking orders from "the government" on what to write

I guess you are right. The govt would never work with anyone that has anything to do with LSD or crossdressing. Never.

Do you think they write an episode and it just goes to air? No producers, or studio heads, or any other superior has any say in what they put on the TV?

Yo Tilly, we all know you'll read this thread. Please give Phil Ivey a silent cameo, it would be perfect.

And make this the song playing during the credits http://youtu.be/xarfMRZ3E0k?t=55s

Pretty please

Well, Mr. Carpal Tunnel, nobody can keep you quiet, clearly.

just point me to where any single one of the writers/producers/executives/anyone involved with the simpsons or south park says that "the government" ever gave them a suggestion about how to frame an issue in order to shape public opinion

In order for a telvision/radio channel to broadcast a show, they are required to do Public Service Announcements since, by law, the media is supposed to be a service for the public. PSAs take up valuable ad time so most outlets choose an alternative. Turn the SHOW into a PSA and that counts toward their PSA quota.

Remember those "The More You Know" ads like this one? They used to be on all the time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpLFuA2i3wg

Not any more. It's way more profitable to work them into your show, rather than take the 10-30 seconds during a commercial break where you can sell ad time to your sponsors.

This is all legal and happens every day and has enormous potential for corruption.
