I know this is a legendary line and saw this a few years ago on ESPN and many people love that line. It is definitely an insult line i know but can someone tell me why this line is so funny? If a player is bad and phil tells him he can't even spell poker, what does that mean? I am pretty slow and don't understand this line.

Phil is using his soul reading ability impressively out of his normal element. Phil is predicting that in the 5 different letters you'd need to combine in order to get the word "poker", said villain would either get one letter incorrect, forget one or add one. What a legend

Can't believe that I am giving a serious answer but:

The humor in this is based on Hellmuth putting in serious question his opponent's intelligence. Try it again with subtext in brackets: "This guy can't even spell poker [let alone play it with any intelligence / acumen]"

fwiw, this line was hilarious, and I have been a Hellmuth fan since, except the 2009 WSOP "you are an idiot!!" with finger pointing.
