I just found this on my Facebook:

Quote:
ALL BETS ARE OFF >> TV stations in Montgomery and Jackson, MS report that the Pearl River Resort casino, run by the Choctaw Indians band, has been seized by federal agents. The casino is located near Philadelphia, MS and is frequented by many Alabama guests. No word on why the Feds moved in.
I found a local story but not much more info here:

That's interesting. Must be some messed up stuff going on. I don't think the FBI would go on tribal land lightly.

Weird related things seem to be going on in the Choctaw Nation politics - it says they elected first female chief a few days ago, then the tribal council threw out the election, then the FBI showed up.

And, my Facebook source has it wrong, I think. Reports from the casino are that it will stay open. But they seized the computers, I think and locked out a couple of the accountants.

Money laundering, maybe? Doubt this really has anything to do with poker or what's been going on with internet poker.

LastLife:

I played Omaha/8 in the Golden Moon's (now defunct?) poker room 2-3 years ago. There was persistent talk among locals that the tribe was in deep financial trouble with a New York hedge fund that owns the debt and financed the properties. There have been constant rumors that the resort would be closed or file for bankruptcy. My understanding, which may or may not be correct, is that the Golden Moon and the Silver Slipper, early on, were managed and operated by Boyd Gaming but the tribal elders decided to boot Boyd and run the resort themselves.

I stepped into the "poker room" at the Silverstar this past February. It was so depressing in there. They had one 1-3 NL game going, and some other micro limit. If you can imagine what poker was like in the early '80s, this is would be it. I had called in, but when I got there, I had them take my name off the list.

Overall, the casino is a smoke filled dump.
