Caesars cut off the internet connection to phuas room then sent Fri agents in disguised as cable repairmen.

Interesting story. I would think he gets off since that search cannot be close to legal.

Everyone knew the fed cut their internet access and went in. That's not new, what's new is how they cut corners and didn't get appropriate approval apparently is news.

Curious on how this plays out, but I don't see these guys getting off unless the feds really screw up the case. Always the possibility that other shortcuts get exposed though.

Let's just send these guys back to Macau. VIP business is struggling there and could use a boost! Oh wait, they're banned there too? Darn-it...

Has it come out yet exactly what they were doing? Like were they taking bets in Vegas and then running them through an offshore site or something?

I'm a bit confused why people would book their action with shady triads from Hong Kong when they could just go to any legit sports book in Vegas...

They probably wanted to play higher than Vegas would allow..

If you pick the best casino in Vegas to bet college hoops for the whole season, had a great model, did 2k plays, you would make a solid 37,000 dollar a year income. But this probably wouldn't work because they would cut you to 500 or throw you out after about three months when your plays showed closing line value.

They were allegedly continuing activities that got them kicked out of Macau 2 weeks before. So not the smartest move flying into Vegas on a $48 million jet and continuing such activities.

Question: what does the price of the jet have to do with any of this?

Yeah but it wasn't really a good possibility at all that they would get caught. They couldn't even get them without cutting corners that border on illegal.

If what they did isn't illegal I'm not sure I want to live here

99% of the folks that arrive in Vegas via air do so on a $48 million+ jet. Paul Phua and seven others arrested for illegal World Cup bets at Caesars

I was going to say that flying to Vegas under normal business pretenses, rather than in your private jet might attract less attention. But then ProfessionalPoker pointed out the obvious and it all made perfect sense.

How does a warrant-less search not constitute really screwing up the case? It's legal to own an ass-load of computer gear. Just because some Wonk thinks this hardware could possibly be used for illegal activities (like Wire Act violations) doesn't really constitute probable cause. This isn't like the maid saw a pile of coke on a mirror. These guys should certainly have an expectation of privacy.

(Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer but I've watched ****-ton of Law and Order)

Easy: Terrorism!!!! Possibility of a terrorist attack against the Fatherland (er, Homeland). Ergo, the US Constitution does not apply, or is suspended, or something.

Just ask Alawaki's American teenage son. Oh that's right, you can't, he was decapitated in a US drone attack.

I believe several articles mentioned that the jet, in addition to the money posted by several well known poker pro's, was used to satisfy the conditions of their bail.

Is this Entrapment? I think it would be ok if they were like "OH something illegal is on your comp we're going to search it." However cutting off internet and then deceiving someone into letting you access there computer is completely different. I am no lawyer so I have no idea. I think the feds would have a better case if they had been upfront and asked to search it instead of using deception. Also why did the feds listen to these employees at Caesars so quicky? I find it odd.

"What the court has to do here is to decide how much is too much"

If that's not too much, where do they draw the line? What about shooting someone in the leg through the window to get a paramedic in to film the surroundings?

Is it in the upper or lower leg?

So it would be better for an illegal gambling ring to get away with it despite the authorities knowing what they were doing but being powerless to do anything about it because they couldn't get a warrant.

The constitution is undeniably a great thing but it's abused by a lot of people, most of whom are lawyers.
