Interesting details of the case have started to come out in major news sites:

I like the FBI immediately relates the sports betting to all these illegal enterprises. Maybe they were just a bunch of rich guys betting sports, IDK why they need to accuse Paul of being a mobster as well. I would be pretty upset about my reputation being thrown in mud if I was Paul.

Caesars rat out their in-house guests(who've btw stayed at Caesars every WSOP losing millions to the house & this is from insider information) to the FBI just because they aren't placing those World Cup bets at Caesars sportsbook downstairs instead.

These Macau highrollers then get arrested, and of course they and their friends will never spend a single dollar at Caesars' properties anywhere ever again. It also tells all the other dubious characters worldwide loaded with millions that Caesars is with the FBI... so of course they will also stay away in the future.

Now comes the news that Caesars is about to file for bankruptcy... any surprise?

"I walked into the Venetian in Macau in November 2014 and guess what, all my German friends were there: Philipp Gruissem, Tobias Reinkemeier, and Max Altergott were all at the tables," he says. "I could not believe it."

Driven by the thrill of a game against the best players around, Tsoukernik told us about how he sat to play at a HK$5,000/$10,000 no-limit hold'em cash game with straddles, and about how he won $1 million USD in a single hand.

"During the second day of the game, we played a really beautiful hand," he remembers. "I had pocket tens and a Chinese opponent had aces. We didn't get any great action before the flop, but when the dealer placed on the table {10-}{4-}{7-}, everything changed. The turn and the river did not improve our hands, so I put my American smile on my face, and I kept playing. The pot got up to HK$8.9 million, and that's because my opponent simply couldn't stop betting. Result? I won $1 million US with just that one single hand."

Poker King Club Macau will take over the poker operations at Solaire casino in Manila. With this move, Manila will very likely become the new Asian capital for poker for the coming years. PokerStars and the Asian Poker Tour also opened their poker rooms few month ago. The question now is, will the Big Game move from Macau to Manila?

Good News for the Big Game

By KATE O’KEEFFE / WSJ
June 2, 2015 12:14 a.m. ET

A federal judge Monday dismissed the U.S. government’s high-profile case against a Malaysian high-stakes gambler it had alleged participated in an illegal World Cup betting ring in Las Vegas last year.

Judge Andrew P. Gordon dismissed the case with prejudice after prosecutors said they couldn't proceed after he ruled to suppress key evidence, according to Nevada District Court papers. The judge threw out the evidence after finding that the government had conducted unconstitutional searches, and, in a search warrant affidavit, made a material omission and misrepresented facts.

In a statement after the order, defendant Paul Phua’s attorneys David Chesnoff and Thomas Goldstein said the result was a victory for their client and “for all Americans concerned about security and personal rights.”

Neither the U.S. attorney’s office nor the Federal Bureau of Investigation immediately returned requests for comment.

The FBI on July 9 raided multiple villas at Caesars EntertainmentCorp.’s Caesars Palace resort on the Las Vegas Strip after the company told authorities that occupants could be conducting an illegal sports-betting operation in conjunction with the World Cup soccer tournament in Brazil, according to court papers. Caesars wasn't accused of wrongdoing.

Weeks before the Las Vegas raid, Mr. Phua was arrested in Macau on similar charges of illegal gambling and after his release from custody, he flew to the U.S. on his plane, court papers say.

Mr. Phua has had prominent roles in Macau high-roller junket companies—which use underground banking networks to facilitate VIP gambling—and is a well-known high-stakes poker player. The FBI alleged in court papers that Mr. Phua also owns one of the world’s biggest sports-betting companies and that he has ties to organized crime.

Mr. Phua, through his lawyers, has denied having any involvement in organized crime and denied participating in the alleged illegal gambling rings in Las Vegas and Macau.

Six of the eight people who had been indicted alongside Mr. Phua in the Las Vegas case, including Mr. Phua’s son, earlier pleaded guilty and were fined and banned from the U.S. for five years. Charges against one of the defendants were dropped.

Sorry for the confusion, so is Phua and company banned from USA for five years? or were those charges dropped?

From the article or looks like 6 people pleased guilty and were banned from the US. Phua on the othe hrand pleaded not guilty so the case preceded to the pre-trial stage where the judge threw out key evidence and the prosecution subsequently withdrew the case.

In other words, the government actually broke the law on multiple fronts in this case.. what a joke.

To me it's not much different from the shutting down of online poker - feds will try to get you if your activity involves money transactions that don't have a nice % of that money going to the government in terms of tax. That's really all it is.. different cases but same motive.
