You bring up a few things. The most important thing players should want is a reliable software suite, which Pokerstars has nailed down.
Obviously, the rake/game changes that have gone into effect in the past couple of years have not been advantageous for a chunk of poker players. That said, those with knowledge have all voiced that the infrastructure of online poker is in a rough state, so it isn't surprising Amaya was trying to do what they thought would keep their cash flowing.
With Baazov currently being investigated for insider trading, there still remains a possibility of the company going private or a sale. Time will tell.
