I know online I am a winning tournament player and a loosing cash player, overall I am still ahead. My cash game has become much stronger but today the competition even in the microstakes is tough and every mistake I make is amplified, every bad beat hurts.

Somehow I still can get ahead in tournaments, I don't know how. I'm just able to adjust my playing style to the table dynamics, if I have a LAG to my left then I know I have to play super tight and hope I can trap the LAG, if I have tight player to my left then I get aggressive and steal every chance I get. If a LAG is on my right then I just need to hit a flop and I'll probably double up or win a nice pot.

The reason why cash games are harder vs tournaments is primarily due to rake difference between cash and tournaments.

In low stakes tournaments you pay 10% of the buy, so you might play with lets say 10$ and play 3-4 hours and pay 1$ in rake.

If you take that 10$ into a cash game and play 3-4 hours you will pay way more than 1$ in rake. Or until you win or lose a similar amount you will play more in tournaments. More money is won, and thus there are more winners in tournaments.

In other words the money that is moved from one player to another relative to the amount that is raked is much much higher in tournaments than in cash games. the rake in cash games is much higher than in tournaments. I believe the rake to winnings ration below 200NL is roughly 1 to 5. If you'r not super player you have no shot at beating those odds and your poker game is more like video poker for you.

That has the effect that the weaker players will bleed out quickly and leave and thus more better players remain. That again results in more relative rake vs winnings because the rake they pay is the same but the winrates are lower between good + better players vs better + worse players.

For me personally I pay around 20-30% rake of what i win in MTT and something very close to 100% in rake in cash.

So in other word, I am a winner before rake but brake even or loser ( i don't really know) after rake.

Most people dont understand how rake works and blame all kinds of things. Even pro's usually do not know or understand how rake works and what effect it has.

Whether you're paying 10% rake in cash games or tournaments makes no difference. You're still paying 10%
