Everything is speculation. Do you realize how long it took for states to get the powerball?

I'm not pulling this out of thin air. Are chances are good in the future. The fastest way will be by a federal bill. As Lt22 has already said....

It's worth noting that Powerball's expansion didn't happen all that rapidly. According to this, after Powerball was created in 1988, you had about a dozen states joining up within the first three or four years, and after that the rate slowed down considerably, with some states not joining until well into the 2000s, and seven states still not participating today. Now granted, there's no reason that internet poker would expand across the states at the same speed as Powerball, but if it did follow the same growth rate, we could expect to see about a dozen states offering online poker by 2015, and it could be ten years before the majority of states do. States act slowly, and poker is controversial.

Federal legislation, on the other hand, could get online poker up and running in 30+ states within a year or two, so needless to say, I think it's the better scenario by far.

More states would go with the federal root since it would be easier for them to do so. Also many states could not support online poker by themselves and would need to make pacts with other states anyways to share player pools. With the fed plan all that states would have the option to opt out but would automatically be opted in. Also if states want to do their own thing they would need to spend the time and money with coming up with their own gaming board to regulate it. Overall it is much easier for states just to be part of a federal plan and get a smaller piece from a larger pie then try and do it on their own.
he's politically/philosophically opposed to the federal gvt being involved in probably a lot of things, one of them being online poker. I don't happen to agree, but he's certainly not ignorant of the discussion.

Don't just see 1) that's just speculation, without seeing 2) and pretty vague, and 3) does nothing to quash to the notion, just to try and prove and point... We obviously disagree. Time will tell on this one. Hopefully Fed passes and we don't have to worry about it.

Well then he should also realize that if poker goes the state route then it will take a lot longer then a federal bill. I posted the dates of when the states joined the powerball. It is not exactly a over night process.

as long as we're talking about Powerball...how does revenue sharing work for the Powerball? Do the states pay one entity to operate the Powerball and then obv keep revenue from sales in their own state?

I am, probably for most things, but poker is one thing I'd like to see them lock up. Mainly for player pools and the current state it's in. I'm definitely pro federal poker bill passing, but if it doesn't, I think we have a major out which he is saying we don't.

Please quote me saying that we don't have a out with the states. I've only said that going the state route will take a lot longer then going the federal route. Let me quote myself...

We disagree on the time frame. You said years down the road. I don't see why this would necessarily be the case and am very optimisitic it would not be the case.

Yes years down the road. Since it would take years down the road to get the same number or close to the same numbers of states sharing a player pool if no federal bill is passed.

That's where we disagree, if no federal bill passes, I think plenty of states will be playing by 2013. Like I said, time will tell and hopefully we don't have to worry about it. February attachment to must pass tax cut bill might make this moot.

Anyone care to take a stab at what needs to happen for us to be playing by end of 2012?

I think an attachment to the tax cut bill would go a long ways towards that. Nevada will be playing in 2012 for sure regardless.

Pretty much this, I think. I don't know too much about our legislative chances, but this is supposed to be our best chance for awhile, and the sooner we get a bill passed, the sooner the sites can get up and running.

I predict we will be playing online by May 2012.

this might be a stupid question but do we have to be a resident of the states that eventually get ipoker... or can we simply travel there and play?

I would hope it would be like state lotteries. If you don't have powerball in your state you can still travel to another state and play it there.

DOJ said that its ok but many people (read big Vegas Casino Companies) may feel it still is prohibited by state laws. That's the crux of the MGM CEO's argument. If the Fed govt doesn't move there is nothing stopping the states from moving individually and they are already starting to do so. The DOJ clarified that it has no problem with them doing so in the case of poker.

Therefore it will be a race between states and federal level to legislate first. Either way the vegas casinos will jump in once they get the all clear.

yes but the MGM CEO already said that they would be interested in it and after things are up and running you can bet your a$$ they will be pushing it with the state legislatures.

They understand what it takes to have a healthy poker site and know it involves the biggest player base possible.

If these new sites have wpt and wsop satellite tourneys, we could see another poker boom! If pokerstars can't come back, that's too bad but hopefully the new sites are good and somewhat near how good pokerstars is. I assume the new sites will be way better than merge and everleaf lol.
