Nice piece on the University of Waterloo as a place that produces young and successful poker players:

I love the fact that the University posts its big winning players to its list of alumni successes.

And I also like one of the player's explanations: because online is still legal in Canada, and because there's nothing else to do in Waterloo in the winter ...

Online poker was still 5 years away in 1993. However, if my memory serves it was around 93 that the floating charity casinos started operating in Toronto. They could only run at a venue for three days before moving on and you had to look for the ads in The Sun to find out where they were.

They were fun, though crazy, and at first super loose (5/10 & 10/20 LHE). I made money in the first year despite being 90% uninformed about the game. Then I started breaking even, then losing, and decided it was time to stop and learn something. Maybe I should have looked into Waterloo? But my university years were all in the past.

I remember seeing a goofy looking kid playing in the Chinatown games. That was Negreanu.

McDonald has won $5.5 million in live tournaments. He did not disclose how much he’s earned online because he prefers to play under pseudonyms.

Thought he was only known as Timex.

Also Choppy I think is from Waterloo Uni.

As a Waterloo grad, every time I read a piece like this I either wish that online poker had come along a decade sooner or that I started a decade later. Hell, the WEB wasn't around when I first started there.

Shameless plug and factoid.

In 2008 at a special event at Crown during Aussie Millions, Timex won 33K in the first ever in the world live MTT on PokerPro tables. Joe Hachem, Antonio, Phil Laak and others played too. They didn't win

Quote:
PokerPro No Limit Hold'em Jan 12, 2008 Crown Casino AU$1,000 + AU$50 1st 97 AU$33,950
A few weeks later, Timex went on to ship EPT Dortmund for €933,600.

Coincidence?

Funny I just saw this thread and a friend sent me this article earlier today. It's a Chinese article about Xuan Liu who also attended Waterloo. Had never heard of her before the article.

The article is in Chinese but the video is worth a watch even if you don't understand it.

Daniel primarily played in the North York and Markham games and he played Funtime casinos. The worst thing the Ontario government did was end the charities as it just made the underground games explode after they killed the charities. Ps I remember seeing Daniel years later after he became semi famous and saying he played 5/10 and was always perked out of his mind wearing a baseball cap and used to bluff at small dog without a home pots(one of the keys to winning at small stakes).
