most of what the article says is true. as for the guy who steal money from his kids and others, he is not the average gambler.

I wonder how long it will take the average 2p2er to come to the realization that gambling has a net negative effect on society, regardless of how it may benefit us poker players.

This article pisses me off so much... There are more alcoholics per alcohol drinker than degenerate gamblers per gamblers and alcohol and tobacco is legal. That should be /end of conversation.

People should be smart enough to learn that ever action they take has its consequences. Gambling(poker excluded) is -EV. You can never make money in the long run by gambling.

If too much alcohol is bad for health, people should control their drinking habits. It should not mean that I should not be able to enjoy drinking few times a week if my neighbor is drunkard.

I stopped after the first paragraph. He introduces some crazy addictive compulsive guy and he puts it in the beginning to try and paint a picture that all of us are this way in some shape or form. Poor journalism, why he works for AOL. Gambling is gambling and poker is poker. 2 completely different things.

"It wasn't until 2010, that we discovered he had developed an online poker addiction that resulted in almost a million dollars being taken out of the business -- money that was supposed to go towards paying state and local tariffs, the FCC, and the IRS for business and personal taxes."

"If he had just taken the money out legitimately, he would have paid off his house. Instead, he lost more than $330,000 to online and table poker games in Las Vegas and Atlantic City and used the rest to travel, buy electronics, and shop. I ended up taking him to court and haven't spoken to him since," says Winter.

He must have spent 670k on travel, electronics and shopping, so if anything he should be sent to the travel addiction forums.

I've so many issues with this article.

The principal one is their saying that gambling costs society in terms of the money lost. If I spent money on gambling, it was my money. Not society's.

Second, they seem to blame the low savings rate of Americans on gambling. No, the low savings rate is because we spend a lot on different things. Are we going to make people save 10% after taxes each month? That would be the only way to guarantee a higher savings rate.

Finally, there are claims about the rate of various negative things in Vegas and laying the blame on gambling. I checked out the rate for burglary back in 2009 and there are places that have much higher rates. I am willing to bet that it would be the same for the rates of the other stuff.

A really piss poor article. Did Citizen Link (the FoF affiliate) have a hand in this?

It is true that some people become addicted to gambling and it ruins their life, but these articles make it seem like everyone who gambles is a degen which simply isn't the case.
I'm sure problem gambling only affects a small percentage of people.

Should Fast Food be banned because some people lose control and eat that **** 3 times a day and become fat?

When they talk about the cost to society, they are not talking about the money you spend. They are talking about the cost to society for treatment, combating increased crime, etc.

But it is a piss poor article.

Well, 2plus2 [posters] may not believe in AOL, but AOL [posters] believe in 2plus2. One person leaving a comment mentions this thread and posted a link. He, or she, said something about apologists.

I dont know. What I do know is that the worst form of gambling is state run lotteries. They have the worst odds, are taxed the heaviest and are aimed at the poor and uneducated.

I wish somebody would bribe, Im sorry, lobby politicians to have them shut down.
