Happy he's doing well outside poker but surprising that an English major with poker background got these interviews in the first place.

I remembered the name being involved in a scandal but didn't remember all the details... he actually talks about the Girah scandal on his own about page on his website. Assuming all the information is accurate I think that's actually impressive not to just try to sweep it all under the rug and own up to mistakes and move forward.

I don't think anyone think of that prop bet when they hear his name,

He did a pretty good job scrubbing his Google footprint. There's still some negative results for his name, but not as many as you'd think. About a year ago he was sending out requests to take stuff down. Maybe he hired a SEO firm too.

Friend of mine who works in software dev says this isn't as impressive as it sounds at first, considering a lot of that 'salary' is most probably stock options. (Maybe it said it definitely was partly this in article, can't remember.) And because Airbnb isn't public, that stock value is even more speculative than normal.

Also, it's weird because most companies don't want their employees talking about salary. My friend said some tech companies are all about transparent salaries these days, to promote fairness and attract talent when they pay well. But I did a quick search online and didn't see anything about Airbnb being one of those transparent companies in that way.

"Airbnb returned with a new offer worth $250,000 ($130K salary, 25K signing, 95K a year in RSUs). He took the job."

Obv depends on what strings are attached to the restricted stock units (eg vesting schedule, redemption rights), but yeah they're super illiquid. "95K" isn't quite a "made-up" number, but it's murky AF.

Yahoo runs a lot of articles where people claim to have started their own business and are now claiming they make x amount per year, but the articles are really just advertisements for that person's business. Dont know if that is the case here or not. 250k in san francisco is definitely possible, although its usually people who graduate from one of the top schools with top internships or people who have more experience than he has who are making that much.

this sentence makes me suspicious

Quote:
He first learned how to code by joining a 12-week coding bootcamp at App Academy, where he later became Director of Product.

its possible this is an advertisment for app academy

EDIT: never heard of this guy but read he has a history of scamming, makes me even more suspicious.

its worth noting that silicon valley is doing everything they can to hire non-white non-asian engineers. like SAT scores, the bar is set much much lower if you're not asian or white.

If he's working in Silicon Valley this sounds like an entry level salary. The stock unit valuations are obviously super speculative.

Edit: During my last job search saw some SF job openings at $180k in salary, when I saw the amount I was like hmmm maybe I should apply, then said, but where am I going to find a house for my family that's less than $8k a month and not an hour commute?

Also in my new job I've been responsible for hiring and interviewed at least one software engineer whose main programming education was a bootcamp, but you obviously have to have a lot going in in terms of your technical knowledge, ability, and documented projects before you can get a job that way.

That old locked thread about Haseeb Quereshi was pure gold. Internet sex with lawyer(both have had fake profiles photos, after personal meeting they decided to not sleep with each other), callgirl lover - coworker with degree in math and father in prison, multiple gimmick in thread for like 15 people, 2 + 2 private detectives with paranoid personality disorders...
It is long but worth reading lol

Now there's a surprise!

So he learnt everything from some short n00b programming course and now has a $250k/yr job? Will be interesting to see how long it takes them to realise how little he knows.

According to the article his salary is only $130k/year. He got a one-time $25k signing bonus and some RSUs. $130k for a entry-level software dev in SF is pretty standard. But Airbnb is not public, those RSUs are not liquid. Trying to estimate the value of RSUs before a liquidity event is a fool's game, there's all kinds of trickery the execs and investors can use to dilute or claw back your shares. I've heard there is a secondary market for illiquid shares in startups but who knows if they're giving you a fair deal. Then add into the fact that SF is expensive as all hell. Even on $130k you can only live comfortably there if you're single or a DINK with no debt, don't mind living in a dilapidated shoebox, taking gross public transit everywhere, rarely going out and not having any hope of owning anything but a starter condo. Then add the fact that you're probably in the 28% tax bracket (and don't forget CA income tax) and it starts to look like less of a good deal. But hey, good on him for being successful in something he set out to do.
