I personally have never liked Howard Lederer, and don't think he is very good poker player (based on what I saw of his many TV appearances over the years as player and commentator). However, regarding Black Friday, once the US Department of Justice got involved and there were criminal charges being threatened, I can guarantee you that Lederer was told (correctly) by his attorney to not discuss the FTP scandal with anyone until the case was settled. So because of that I don't think he has been able to defend himself in the media and to the public.
Also, there is a big difference between fraud and incompetence. Lederer clearly acted incompetently in his role with FTP (along with others), but no one has proven that Lederer committed fraud. I would find it very hard to believe that feds would let him off the hook with regards to criminal charges (which they apparently have) if Lederer had in fact knowingly committed fraud.
Every single person who lives in the US and played for money on FTP (and other sites) violated US laws regarding illegal gambling, money laundering, and wire fraud (along with the online sites). Are all these players willing to admit to their crimes?
As far as I know, everyone who had a cash balance at FTP will be paid back. Daniel Negreanu seems to suggest that this will happen only due to the generosity of the firm he represents (Poker Stars) that has since purchased FTP. But I find it hard to believe that Poker Stars would do that if there really was any substantial amount of player's funds permanently missing at FTP.
