Anyone else having trouble finding a month to month or a 6 month lease apartment?

Also any good websites to find apartments around the Vancouver area would be greatly appreciated. I have looked for places on craigslist but everything seems to be at least a year contract.

I have been looking at the Port Moody area, it seems cheaper (rent does at least) and has convenient public transportation to downtown. Any cons about this area of town?

I live near Port Moody in Coquitlam. It is a nice area, especially Newport Village. I don't know what the rents are there, but it N. Village has one of the best pubs in the area, a nice Italian grocery/deli, a veggie place, and high end meat and seafood shops.

Castlegar... cool. I lived up in Rossland for 10yrs. but am now down in Trail.
I grew up in the Slocan Valley/Nelson.

Good places, but I doubt many grinders would want to move there. Pretty small and remote... maybe if you were going up with a bunch of people who were all into skiing. Whitewater is the nuts.

So what's been the general consensus of what to tell the boarder people what you will be doing for 6 months in Canada please?

the property owners out here are prob more likely looking for long term leases...for shorter terms you can try rental management companies like Colliers (sure there are more like them) that manage apartment blocks and may not mind shorter term leases...

Small & remote - - true. I was thinking though for those who don't give a sh_t about bars/clubs, etc. & who've taken a hit online because of BF (& FTP) & who are looking for a cheap place to get a start from (I mean there's not that many places that offer so much & are sooooo cheap to live).
Vancouver is also a ~1hr. flight via PacificCoastal for ~$130 (as opposed to the 6.5-7.0hr. drive). Not too shabby.

I've got 4 empty apts. here now, bachelors > $391/mth. (no lease necessary... pay month-to-month with 1/2mth. for damage deposit) & 1bdrm. for $470/mth., both with heat included!

depends how long you are staying. If you're coming for a week or two, I'd just say that you are here to enjoy the city. If you're staying for months you will need a better story than I am here to check out casinos lol

Friend of mine who came over, brought documentation showing that he had a lease back in the states after his x month period stay in vancouver would be over so that there was more reason to believe he would leave the country when his visa or w/e is over

Definitely don't lie, coming up to play poker even for months at a time is okay with them as long as you can show some kind of ties back to the US. It's legal in Canada and not considered working. What's not okay is lying, they're very extensive and can check your phone, Google your name, search all your belongings, etc. etc. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT, ABSOLUTELY NOT NECESSARY AND ILLEGAL TO LIE.

Do they always search your car inside and out?
Grinders moving to Vancouver Quote
12-03-2011 , 05:13 AM
No, only if they for some reason find you sketchy. I've been back and forth across the border maybe a dozen times and never been at the booth for longer than a minute

Your question seems a bit sketchy, though... I wouldn't recommend bringing anything that you need to hide...

I had a real hard time trying enter Canada. The agents at the border were extremely difficult to talk to and accused me of being a liar when i didnt directly tell them i was attempting to move to Canada to play online poker. The agents went through all my personal information on my cell phone and PC without my permission. Meanwhile I had to wait in the waiting area for approx. 2 hrs. When I spoke with an agent again, I was asked questions in a round about way that pertained to my emails they read on my phone. They saw all my emails from Poker Refugees, and other emails indicating i was trying to move to Canada. After they found these my credibility was ruined, and they advised me that I could be arrested for attempting to defraud an officer of the law. I wasn't allowed to cross the border on my 1st attempt, and on my 2nd attempt the next day I was issued a 14 day pass. If i did not leave Canada within this time period a warrant would be issued for my arrest. Now I am in the system and the agents apparently have a file on me. I was told that anytime I enter Canada now I could be issued a pass. Does anyone of any advice for being allowed to enter Canada without any time constraints. Is there anyway for me to get around this? Is my file specific to the border crossing I was at? If I attempt to enter Canada by train, boat, or plane will I still have problems with agents at the border as when I did driving across?

Both sides of the border are allowed to search your phone/cpu and access accounts such as facebook or email without you personal consent.

I am conflicted upon hearing your troubles at the border.

On the one hand I am surprised and a bit disappointed that you had so much trouble. On the other hand I am even more surprised, and somewhat pleased to hear that the border guards are aware of what is going on, and are doing what they can to throw in a roadblock or two. I had no idea that Canadian Customs was aware of the fact that hundreds (maybe thousands?) of American poker players are trying to come across to make a living.

The conflicted side of me realizes that all you folks coming across, while you will be paying sales taxes, won't be contributing a dime more than that to the country that let you in, other than your purchases of alcohol and Subway sandwiches.

I'm flying into Vancouver in a few days, I have a return ticket booked 4 days after that but I'm not going to be using it. I shouldn't have any trouble with immigration if I tell them I'm just visiting for 4 days right?

I've flown in about a dozen times for 10 days or less (return ticket booked), and it's been <60 seconds every time telling them I was there "to gamble", with a further follow up explanation that it was to play mostly online poker ("can't play from the States on the main site anymore"), and maybe once or twice live at Edgewater. If I was golfing or getting together with people, I also mentioned that.

The one time I was interviewed flying in my return ticket was 23 days later.
