Was Tom Dwan Never Ever the Best? Was Tom Dwan Never Ever the Best?

Read an article about him where daniel negreanu mentioned dwan was never the best or wasn't ever one of the best and he and the other guys like galfond and dang brothers were there at the right time to play guy and won a lot of his money.

However during a show of high stakes poker back in 2008 or 2009, i recalled there was a conversation where dwan talked with daniel, antonio and other guys at the table where dwan mentioned a lot of the online 5/10nl and 10/20nl players pooled their money to play dwan and he mentioned he crushed every one of them. Does anyone recall this? Was on an episode of High stakes poker.

At around 2008-2009 i know tom dwan was huge and was probably one of the best nl players in the world.

But from what i read about him the last few years, he's supposed the mark and players at 5/10nl hu now would be salivating to play against him now. Is this true or false?

Does this mean Dwan was never that good? It doesn't make sense still b/c even if he wasn't he did beat a lot of the 5/10nl hu regs so something here doesn't add up.

So basically Dwan at that time was the best nl heads up player in the world but as the few years go by, everyone got better but since he doesn't play online anymore and plays high stakes live cash full ring in macau, he's no longer good and thus a mark at even 5/10nl now?

well, I think it was in 2008 or 2009 when he announced that challenge offering 3:1 to anyone who would beat him over a 50k sample size of $200/$400 NLH (not sure if PLO) and it did not seem like there were any more than few people interested, so I think this answers your question pretty well

as for being "the mark at 5/10nl hu", well, I dunno whether that IS true or false, but it seems perfectly possible and natural given the fact that he has not really played online for the last 3-4 years for the reasons you summed up in the last sentence

Yeah if you can beat 10nl now, you could easily crush Durrrr for $10 million if only you had the bankroll.

Durrrr is basically a live player now. Doesn't really play on the internets any more. I heard something about some Chinese games.

And as you know, there was a long line of people who did want to play him (Ivey) and at least one he would not play (Galfond). Durrrr was always good at game selection (Guy).

If he goes and sits at a 5/10nl 6 max table, will it fill up very fast?

He's the new Chip Reese, eschewing TV and publicity, keeping a low profile, and crushing private cash games.

Durr is world-class at applying psychology, memory, and "meta" stuff both online and live. Unfortunately for him, "GTO" players used math to exploit him heads up.

Before people were running simulations in the present, Durr was the king.

Tom really needs to spend more time grinding tough midstakes online games instead of playing whales in Macau for millions, doesn't he know his NVG ranking is slipping?

Never seen one guy get so much nut-hugging when 30-40 other guys deserve just as much praise.

2009? he got crushed in 2009. he was a top NLHU player in ~2006/7, surely. after that he transitioned to PLO.

imo he's been among the best at various games at certain points in time.

How would Negreanu be a good judge of whether or not Tom Dwan was ever a top cash game player or not? Negreanu was an absolutely awful cash game player when Tom Dwan first started playing big cash games live.

When those 30-40 other guys can play in a live high stakes NL game against world class players and p0wn it consistently like Dwan did then they'll earn our praise.
