Confessions of an online poker player

Saw this on the msn and though it was interesting.

This is a guest post from an Anonymous Professional Poker Player (sexy!).
Quote:
There is an old saying, "Poker is the hardest way to make an easy living." After playing full-time poker for 4 years, I can't think of a better statement to describe it. There are obvious benefits to poker: You set your own schedule, you work when you want to work, and your performance is relatively proportional to your income. If you play on the internet, you can work from practically anywhere. Unfortunately, every one of these have a catch.

J: I know this was pretty long, but I hope you enjoyed it! As a guy, the thought of playing poker full-time is incredibly fascinating (and is one of my top 5 dream jobs!). Stay tuned for round 2 when we learn the "day in the life of" a professional poker player. That's when we'll *really* see what it's like!

Re: Confessions of an online poker player

tbh i didnt think it wAS a good read. it only told me what we already know about how you can win or lose x amount in a certain amount of time and play whenver etc

also you say the 'day in the life of a poker player'

so will that article be like this

'wake up, turn pc on... play poker for 5 hours... get some food... play some more poker.. go to bed'

Because i cant imagine it being much different to that! for me personally laliberte just has it sorted. has a company, yachts, many homes, can play poker with illions and not care.... what a life

It's hard to imagine anyone who doesn't already know a good deal about poker making too much sense of this. Seems to me like he uses a lot of jargon and makes a lot of assumptions that he never explains.

Well stated, Foucault.. The article was just a krock of sht, and some of the phaggs on here go apesht over its nonsense..

What nonsense you ask? Oh uh, 'poker is just like any other job,' EXCEPT for the steady paycheck, the benefits, the socialization, the lack of social utility whatsoever, or remote possibly of growth.. etc...

Re: Confessions of an online poker player

I thought this was an awful read. Most of the paragraphs are just various complaints about what sucks. It's a shame the author doesn't give any real advice, mostly just generic "XXX is a form of online poker to make money" and "XXX sucks about online poker".

- "The problem is 6 hour days turn into 14 hour or even 20 hour days, without breaks for meals or even using the bathroom, without taking a laptop with you"

Make a schedule and prepare for it. Christ, it's not rocket science.

- "losing for months on mtts playing flawlessly"

lol bs or you just suck.

"it becomes the same grind of any other job, without the guaranteed income and health insurance."

That's why you do more than play poker for income, or have other activities and take a few days off. Health insurance? Get it from your spouse/domestic partner, or buy it - you can get good coverage for $200/mo.

Seriously, whoever this guy/woman is just fails. I hate hearing people gripe about things they can easily change. It makes them seem pathetic.

Re: Confessions of an online poker player

^^^so you'd rather hear the author nut his pants about the last donkey he stacked off and how good it felt? about how successful hero calls and correct monster laydowns are sooo satisfying? about what to do when you raise JJ utg and get 3bet by a lagtard?

you're missing the point. it's a compare/contrast article written from the perspective of a full time grinder, your average casual playing donk is not the target audience. it's meant to offer a realistic perspective on playing poker full time, and the reality is that while there are some basic simple pleasures/luxuries afforded by the lifestyle, there are still a lot of negative things that come along with it and it's ez game to get swallowed up by them and fail.

if you play full time, you may not agree 100% with everything said in this article, but you still relate to and understand it. if you're a losing or breakeven player looking for "advice", then this is not the article you're looking for.

i enjoyed it and it is the sort of thing that i would share with my older brother the conservative banker or my sister the marketing exec who do not play poker, look at it somewhat skeptically, and know basically nothing about what my job really entails.
