A pretty good read for those who don't suffer from TLDR syndrome. The term "Bumhunting" or accusing someone of being a "Bumhunter" is getting a little played out as of lately. You may or may not agree with everything that Hunter says but I felt this worth getting out there because I think most of you will agree that he approached the issue pretty objectively.

The term “bumhunter” gets thrown around like crazy these days, and it basically makes no sense at all. Originally the term was coined to describe someone who sits around waiting for heads up action, but refuses to play anyone who is not a total fish. Then it started to mean someone who only plays bad players but not anyone good, so the meaning started applying to more and more people, but the concept remained the same: heads up player who only plays weak players. Some people look down on that, which is their right, but then they bash bumhunters for their high winrate and high earnings by saying they suck at poker because they bumhunt. Alright fine, I don’t really agree with that, but at least there’s a reasonable thought process behind that argument when it applies only to heads up players.

Right so it's totally fine to only play when games are good but have no part in starting them or keeping them going? Sounds like online poker players are digging their own graves to me. What else is new?

Anyone who doesnt bumhunt to a certain extent is burning money really. Why 8 table 8 random tables when you can use some table selection and play on 8 good tables instead and earn more $ per hour. Its simple economics really.

Question: Since poker is a game skill doesn't it mean that all winning players are bumhunters?

How many times it needs to be explained ? Of course it's profitable to only play when fish plays but to have a game for fish to sit in there need to be some people who start games and/or keep game going when fish sit outs.
Now if you refuse to participate in this process you make your living out of efforts of other regs which is why they don't like you and call you scam, leach or bumhunter and rightly so.
It's the same in any other human endeavor: if you reap benefits from other people's effort refusing to take part in those efforts; those people won't like you.

No, see above. The difference is if you participate in the process which results in game going and fishes sitting in them which doesn't mean that you only play against other regs. I hope it's obvious.

If by "Originally" you mean 2004 then yah...but the term was used in 1979 I know for a fact. And it was used before then I am almost certain.

Bum hunting just means you actively seek out bad players and beat up on them.Be it 5CD O8 or Razz.

there's a difference between bumhunting and game selecting. the only knock (for me) on true bumhunters is that eventually fish realize they are the mark and poker just isn't as fun when that happens. if the whole table insta quits when a fish is busted but still at the table, it's definitely not the best message to be sending the guy.

i've always said that leatherass is a good player and just as good at the intangibles (game selecting, playing A game, etc.) as he is at the game itself. people can hate on him but i don't really see an issue with most of the things people accuse him of.

truth is, all poker players see the majority of their profit from the weakest players at a given level.

There is nothing wrong with game selecting, its fine that LA does it hardcore. The issue people generally have with him is he does this, and then cops the most arrogant attitude on 2p2 thinking he's better than everyone and a model for all. Christ, he advertises himself for event appearances/speeches ffs.

1. Poker is quickly drying up
2. People are pissed about it
3. Fish are getting fewer and fewer
4. Most regs are breaking even against the other regs
5. Natural to pick scapegoats to explain it
6. Winning players who fish hunt are given the blame

Game selecting:

At the start of your session, scan every table of your limit and choose the X best (where X is how many tables you play). Re-scan every 30 minutes or so as tables break and you need new ones.

Bumhunting:

Open every table in the lobby across every stake with at least one person on it. Add your name to the waitlist on tables with a huge fish on it. Meanwhile, keep an eagle eye out on the rest of them. As soon as a fish sits, pounce on the seat two to his left (a better bumhunter would've already beaten you to the one directly to his left) and play until he busts.

Game selecting: what winning players with lower winrates than you do
Bumhunting: what winning players with higher winrates than you do

IMO theres a difference in players who sit in on or hunt losing players to make money but refuse action to a winning player - the bumhunter

Then theres Phil Ivey that will sit in ANY game or play ANYONE at any game because his skill level is so high that he doesn't have to game select - the skilled player
