"The appearance of a $1 million display similar to the one that entertained millions of Las Vegas tourists from the 1950s until 2000 is the latest gimmick by Binion's Gambling Hall & Hotel owner Terry Caudill to revive some of the spirit from the casino's heyday.

The money is encased in an acrylic pyramid on top of a poker table in the middle of the casino. Casino workers brought it out last week to the surprise of tourists who happened to be there when they installed the display.

"It was pretty wild," said Binion's general manager Tim Lager. "People were taking pictures with their phones."

Unlike the version of the stack on display from 1964 to 2000, the new display isn't made of rare $10,000 bills. It is $270,000 in $100 bills, $688,000 in $20 bills and $42,000 in $1 bills."

Assuming each brick of money is 200 bills, that display is comprised of 13.5 bricks of 100s, 172 bricks of 20s and 210 bricks of 1s, for a total of 395.5 bricks. That means only 3.4% of the money is hundos. What's the point of even having hundos when they represent such a small percent of the total displayed bills?

A display of 5000 bricks of singles would be a sight to see.

I have a picture of Amarillo Slim and myself standing in front of the million dollar display in 1978. It was another great Benny Binion idea. You could have a few picture postcards made free. Then you had to come back in a couple of hours to get your pictures. That meant two trips to the casino. I would always get postcards. They first had free photos in the Las Vegas Club in 1959. I still have one of those somewhere.

The old display had a giant, upside down Horseshoe with the bills. I'll bet even money that Ray Zee still has one of those picture postcards.

These bills are now on the secondary market and bring a premium over "common" 10k notes (that trade for $60,000 to $80,000).

A former Fremont Street casino worker has his "Holy Grail," and Las Vegas has said goodbye to a famous -- and often-photographed -- collection of money.
Jay Parrino, a 53-year-old coin dealer, confirmed Thursday that he has bought the display of 100 $10,000 bills that stood for almost 50 years at Binion's Horseshoe in downtown Las Vegas. Parrino said he made the deal in December and received the collection earlier this month.
"It doesn't get any more exciting than this," said Parrino, reached in Kansas City, Mo., via phone.
For decades the $10,000 bills, encased in plastic at the rear of the casino, were a draw for tourists who could receive a free photograph of themselves next to the display.
Parrino has been photographed numerous times with the bank notes and has spent hours studying them.
"(Over the years) I've looked at this thing thousands of times," he said. "It's just such an unbelievable item ... There's something very sexy about a $10,000 bill.
"It's the Holy Grail."
While he would not reveal the purchase price, Parrino figured each bank note is worth at least $60,000, and he spent under $10 million for them all.
"It's a crowning achievement," said the man who paid $1.5 million for a rare nickel in 1996.

Yeah, Becky Binion Behnen sold off the display before Harrah's took it over. Her and her husband really run the place into the ground. Ended up in a family feud with the rest of the family (Jack Binion). Is why Doyle and a few other notables boycotted the place and didn't play the WSOP for a couple years.

The Binion family is like the Texas version of the Godfather. Old man Benny (gambler/killer) goes to Las Vegas, builds a small empire. The son Ted murdered, Jack the other son successful in his own right, daughter Becky with greedy over spending husband. There's a story for you Johnny Hughes. Complete with barking iron, buffalo robes, poker, and everything. You could get your pic of you and Slim and the display in on it.
