I doubt anyone knows the exact answer to this, but isn't running on a treadmill more similar to jumping up and down while the matt scrolls underneath you than to actual running?
Not trying to impugn Ashman's accomplishment at all btw (I personally would definitely drop dead or quit long before the first marathon was through, treadmill or not), just curious if anybody has any science on this.

in some ways running on a treadmill is a lot harder than running outside, you sweat more and your body has a bigger problem handling exertion because you are standing in place, your pores do not lose the sweat as easily, any runner who has done intervals on a treadmill vs track will attest to this...
the treadmill def. helps with the poundage on your legs, it absorbs the beating they take, but the idea this was somehow a lot easier cause it was on a treadmill is lol, if anything he was prob losing more electrolytes etc per hour than he would have running outside... also mentally running on a treadmill is a lot harder
