There has been a play chip "black market" on both FTP and Stars for years (and particularly since Black Friday). The sites used to penalize sellers, but it looks like Stars realized the best thing to do was just get in the market themselves.

I play 400-800 Stud/8 play money on Stars bec I won't play on Bovada and I like to click buttons, plus most of the players are actually not just ****ing around. Sick brag: I turned 2K into 1.75MM but that's not the point. Stars 'rakes' that play money game to the absurd max of $200/pot. They started selling play money chips a couple/few months ago and I'm guessing that they think that w/ their ridiculous rake they can make some money.

I think they rake and charge fees for sng/tournaments in order to get the play-money players used to the idea of the rake/fees so if they (are able to) transition over to real$ the concept doesn't seem alien to them.
After all they had fees in place for many years prior to selling play chips, I don't think it is meant as a money making scheme, doubt too many people pay for play-money anyways.

The amount they are overcharging for the chips is too high, but for some people in the US that can't play online, and live more than 3 hours drive from as casino, play money is all there is


That said the low level play money games are donkey shove fests so to get to some level of decent play you need about 2-4 million to play the 100k games...

up until recently you could sell play chips at 1-2$ a million, and people were definitely buying.

considering the size of the games these days and the general softness i'd say $100/h would be a reasonable expectation for someone capable of winning at $50nl. not that you could sell unlimited volume, but i'm pretty sure there're a lot of people who made a lot of money at it before isai sheinberg sniffed out the couple of extra pennies that were hiding in the crevices of his empire.
