For those of us that are older and have family considerations, leaving is often not an option.
My wife and I live about 10 miles from her 89-year-old mother, my wife goes out there at least once a week, and we bring one of the grandchildren out to see her at least once a month. It would really be fun to tell my wife that we're leaving the country, with the possibility that her mother might die before my wife gets a chance to see her again. It's pretty much the same deal with my parents, they live about 5 miles from us and are in their early 80s.
Even for someone younger than I and for whom aging parents aren't an issue, there might be the spouse's job to consider, for example, my wife makes a good salary with a great benefit package, including a retirement plan, medical/dental/optical/life insurance, corporate discounts, and more.
If you have children, then it gets really interesting. I had three children in high school at the same time, in grades 9, 11 and 12. In a situation like that, would I wait until the oldest graduated, then move? Move and leave all the kids with someone else so they could finish high school?
There are a ton of possible family complications. What if you're engaged and your fiancee is unwilling to leave the country because of her family issues? (Yes, I know what's coming--some variation of "Dump her, find a sexy eskimo girl and heat up her igloo.")
When you're a single 21-year-old grinder, you can do whatever you want, and live wherever you want. In general, the older you get, the more responsibilities you have, making the decision to move a lot more complicated.
