I am happy to contribute to any serious analisys with my HHs.
I am a winning mid/high stakes SNG regular.

re: joely/Rek

The seed and the random numbers are not the same thing. An RNG uses a formula based on some initial input to generate series of random numbers. So if I give it the input 5 I might get 4, 3, 7, 5, 1, 9, etc. If I give it 9 then I might get 6, 1, 8, 2, 2, 5, 4, etc. That number I give it is called the seed. The very useful thing about the numbers generated is that the RNG algorithm used ensures that any number in the sequence has an equal probability of appearing next so you get a series of pseudo-random numbers that fit all statistical characteristics of actual equal-probability random numbers - basically it is bias free.

What thermal readings, white noise, user input, etc are used for is to generate a truly random seed. Using them to directly generate numbers would be a bad idea since it is extremely likely that the readings are biased (eg- a reading of '7' might occur more frequently than a reading of '0'), which is fine for the generation of a seed but fatal for the generation of actual random numbers.

There is basically a 0% chance of there being any unintentional flaw with the RNG system of any modern site. It's not particularly complex even if there is a bit of vernacular when talking about it.

Yes, they are PRNG's technically, but whatever.

As for a mass data collection and analysis, I'd love to see it. I'm a big data-driven nerd. However, sharing that much data poses problems, as you might imagine

As a big data driven-nerd you surely also know that hand histories, and other patterned text, compress extremely well. A full month of data for the one site I've received data on so far was more than 4gigs of text. It compressed down to less than 400 megs - or enough to easily share on any file sharing site.

On that note, I am am still seeking data for any site except for Stars for the month of August for 100NL 6-max. I'm considering paying out of pocket to a datamining service for access to their archives to obtain the data, but I'd still prefer to have it 'donated' since this is all still just a pet project of mine at this point.

No, poker software RNGs are not referred to as PRNGs, because they're not PRNGs. I think I've posted the link to the proof of this twice in this thread already (and certainly at least once).
Quote:
My understanding was that it starts with a seed that is randomized through "thermal noise". I'm not sure of the exact definition but I thought I read somewhere it was randomized by mouse movements of the users.
There is no "seed".

Both of the thermal noise and mouse movements are used at PokerStars.

Is this not how an RNG works? If so, can the cards be unpredictable, not perfectly random, but still not be "rigged".
That's how the RNG works in your ordinary home PC, or your iPod, or Planet Poker, as detailed in the FAQ of this forum.

That's not how the RNG works in modern leading online poker sites.

So even if we prove that it's not random, does that matter? Should we even expect it to be random?
You can't prove that it's not random, because it is random. You can expect and demand it to be random, because it is possible.

No they're not technically PRNGs! There's nothing pseudo about it.

This is proved here: http://www.cryptography.com/resource...s/IntelRNG.pdf

Good cryptography requires good random
numbers. This paper evaluates the hardwarebased
Intel Random Number Generator (RNG)
for use in cryptographic applications.
Almost all cryptographic protocols require
the generation and use of secret values that must
be unknown to attackers. For example, random
number generators are required to generate
public/private keypairs for asymmetric (public
key) algorithms including RSA, DSA, and
Diffie-Hellman. Keys for symmetric and hybrid
cryptosystems are also generated randomly.
RNGs are also used to create challenges, nonces
(salts), padding bytes, and blinding values. The
one time pad – the only provably-secure
encryption system – uses as much key material
as ciphertext and requires that the keystream be
generated from a truly random process.

I am really sorry if I am asking questions that may have already been answered. I got caught up in this thread and there is a lot of good info. It's just really hard to digest all of it.

If I may respectfully propose the following two questions:

Please answer only if you have worked in or studied cryptology.

Do we expect the RNG that drives the deal in Poker Stars to be perfectly random?

What are the consequences of a non-random RNG?

Feel free to elaborate.

Sharing that much data causes problems not due to size issues - most people who play hundreds of thousands of hands simply don't normally give up their PT data.

OK scratch my previous post.

It says that great care must be taken in selection of algorithms...so poker sites can provide a random game, but that doesn't mean they do.

This makes me realize that you definitely have to watch where you play. A sloppily written algorithm won't work. Any deviation from the true random % will favor the weaker player.

The first thing we need to do, it seems to me, is test the cards for randomness over a huge sample size.

Where do I send my HH's?

Oh and another thing.

I think we should test the hole cards ONLY to start. The flop cards are somewhat dependent on whatever hole cards are dealt but the hole cards should be truly random.

That paper actually clearly states that the "truly random" data is extremely biased. That data is then sent through a "corrector" to compensate for the bias and attempt to produce numbers that follow all characteristics of truly random data. The same process I described above. The only difference being that they rely on the corrector to create one series of random data, rather than relying on the pRNG algorithm to generate data "on demand". Either way: that is psueodorandom data. Truly random data is essentially impossible to utilize because of bias. It's all just a question of how you convert biased truly random data into unbiased pseudorandom data.

That paper also brings up some interesting concerns though. They state that the resultant data was also only verified at 5% and 1% confidence levels, which would be insufficient for something such as poker - where even a .1% potential bias in the data would be enormous. They also mention that one of the tests for randomness was failed even at those rather liberal confidence intervals. Again all perfectly fine for typical applications, such as key generation - but for a system that relies of thousands (if not millions) of random data per second/minute - it could be very bad.

All that aside, I am positive that the people who developed the RNG system for Stars were 100% aware of everything I just said - and I again maintain that there is almost no chance of any unintentional flaw with random number generation on any modern site.

Not sure if this is on-topic for this thread, but I've lost 23 consecutive all-in preflop heads-up races in which I was no worse than a coin-flip. By my calculation, the odds of this happening are about 1 in 8 million.

Streaks like that happen to me quite routinely. I know it's not "rigged" and this is all part of expected variance (right?), but it's caused me to quit playing online poker seriously. (I still play some at low stakes just to practice for live.)

The point is, I think the variance is so huge, you really need billions, if not trillions of hands to demonstrate a fair and unbiased rng.

Fair enough. However, I'm a huge favorite in many of the other hands. I'm too lazy to pokerstove every hand, but I'm pretty sure my expected average winning percentage is at least 50%.

Odd question, is there any way to verify hands like this when posted took place in a sequence as suggested.

Hey, at least some hand histories were posted, which is not the norm, and maybe these all happened in a sequence, but even so what is to stop someone from posting selected hands to generate a streak to make a point.

More a question of curiosity then anything else.
