Anyone succeed in this recently, even from Canada? I'm living in Toronto now for max allowed time for someone without a vise (6 months). Went to RBC and TD banks today and was denied an account at both - had US driver's license and passport, but wasn't enough. I was told I needed a Canadian ID or some sort of or a sponsor.

Anyone have similar issues or suggestions? I guess I'm gonna drive to downtown Toronto and see what the Chase bank there has to offer.

Have you tried HSBC? They are actually a UK bank but operate everywhere, they are the worlds 2nd largest bank.

I had no problems opening a TD account, and I know several others in the same situation who have been able to do the same. Perhaps you could try a different branch. There is a lot of variance across different branches regarding their policy of allowing American's to open accounts. There's a lot of good info in this thread:
