Global technology giant Google is reportedly mulling the acquisition of pan-European online gambling operator Bwin.party digital entertainment. This Is Money’s Geoff Foster reported rumors that Google was eyeing a takeover of the struggling Bwin.party at a value of 200p per share, nearly twice Thursday’s closing price of 109p. (Guess Bwin.party CEO Norbert Teufelberger knew what he was doing when he bought an additional 204k shares in his company in May.)

Interesting news when you consider that Party just launched their new platform, website and client.

Let's hope so.

Guess its still the silly season. Can't be an validity to the rumour imo.

But just entertaining the idea... Google would be a HORRIBLE online poker operator. Their customer service is practically non-existent unless you're a paying enterprise customer. They also have zero understanding of the business. It would be such a terrible fit.

I tend to agree with this interpretation. However, think of their marketing reach... they change the google search one day to a deck of cards and BOOM, a half million new customers.

Oh sure, and their clout legislatively would be massive. But that's why this is all a nonsense hypothetical. This is the company that doesn't allow real money apps in their Play store, even in white markets (which is Apple's approach).

Google are renowned for hiring the best. If they were to go through with this they 100% get gaming experts in.

But how much worse could they make the debacle that Party has now become ??

I just discussed this with some of my online gaming industry friends, we all agree that there is probably no truth to the rumor. bwin.party has been accused of being a victim of third party stock rumors to help move the price, this appears to be another example. Don't take this rumor seriously IMO, this type of acquisition would hurt Google's ability to be nimble with government relations, its the kind of technology they would be more likely to close or sell off if it was under their umbrella than acquire.

Don't take this lightly...both companies declined comment...the CEO of Bwin loaded up over 200k in shares in May..why would he do this when just a couple weeks ago they forecasted their revenue for the rest of the year to be less...I think Zynga would fit in this picture as well...if Google buys Bwin, they will buy Zynga too...the Bwin Zynga RMG Facebook app was supposed to launch last week...for some reason it hasn't been released yet...on a side note, look at the open interest in Zynga for Sep, Oct, and Jan calls. There have been a lot of people in the know, loading up on calls for Zynga. Something may happen soon, or it could all be talk

Most companies wouldn't tend to jump head first into entirely different industries unless they feel the players in said industry are incompetent. That said I put the odds of this being true at just about 0. Gambling is an incredibly dirty industry that provides absolutely nothing productive to society. If Google just wanted to sell out on their ideals they could do so far more profitably and effectively than this.

I know Google would want their hands in and on everything but i highly doubt they enter the gaming arena and have to deal with a whole new list of problems.

Here is something to think about...google has been known to want a piece of everything. If google buys Bwin, then you have to think they are eyeing Zynga as well. Bwins new software launch has an emphasis on social and Zynga is their Facebook partner (although the app is still not launched when it should have been by now). Bwins CEO said last week that the Zynga Facebook app should be launching any day. Keep in mind that neither Google or Bwin have turned this down yet and its been 2 days. Zynga has not given up on RMG. If they did, they would have not launched with Bwin on mobile a few weeks ago. And Bwin CEO would not have said that the Zynga Facebook app should be dropping any day. Here is something else to think about...John Doerr (on Board of directors for Google) joins Zynga Board of directors in April, Bwin and Zynga launch Zyngapluspoker and zyngapluscasino in April, Bwin CEO buys 200k shares of Bwin stock in May (knowing that his revenue forecast for the rest of the year was going to be lower, obviously hurting the stock price. Why would he buy over 200k shares?), recruiting for Zyngas now CEO Don Mattrick (the guy who turned around the Xbox and is considered the gaming console genius) started in March, Don Mattrick left Microsoft (he could have had the CEO job at EA but instead chose bad named Zynga?) brought on July 1st, 95% of his pay is stock, in his contract he is paid faster for a sale, Zynga announces no "license" in US (if they are skin for Bwin in US, they do not need to apply for a license)...Zynga has not said one word since their 2nd quarter conference call when they announced no "license" for real money gaming in US. you dont think Google wants to get in on the gaming side and havent kicked around the idea of something like an android console?...you never know, maybe google wanted the king of consoles, wanted in on RMG, and wanted in on social games...they get everything in one...I think this is very legit and is not that far of a reach...if google buys Bwin then they buy Zynga too...we would see a Google console that you can play real money gambling on against other players...

You have accused the CEO of Bwin of insider trading here, that's really quite inappropriate and, as far as I can tell, entirely baseless.

It's a fact that he purchased over 200k shares in May. This stuff happens all the time. Read the paper

This was after their 2nd quarter conference call. They specifically said they are not pursuing a "license" in the US. They were previously applying for an online gaming license in Nevada. If they were going to forgo RMG, they could have easily said that. Instead they chose to say "license". If you are the skin for RMG, you do not need a license. Everything I have stated are facts. Not one thing is false. It's an assumption, yes, but all backed by facts. You and a bunch of other people think they left RMG. They did not. If they did, why launch on mobile in the UK 3 weeks ago with Bwin? And why did Bwin CEO say last week that the Zynga Facebook application should be dropping any day? You can check out the online gambling requirements in Jersey. You do NOT need a license if you are the skin. Facebook and Zynga will fall in this category. They do NOT need a license. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you.

I think you missed the point - if he did that based on information that he had and the public didn't, that would be insider trading.
