Poker on a resume?? Poker on a resume??

03-20-2012 , 01:04 AM
Have played poker as my main source of income since i got out of high school in 2008 up until black Friday. Moving abroad is not a option for me unfortunately so i now have to enter the work world. Ive been trying to put together a resume but feel quite lame with no work experience and no college education and am not sure whether to include my poker playing. I feel the average employer would not understand what i did and would just look down on it. Do you think i should include it, and if so how would you word it?

Could go with the self employed line which ofcourse he/she will ask you what the hell does that mean and then I guess your back to the poker thing. This might be silly but maybe print your opr/ sharkscope although this might look abit rediculous. Alot of this is riding on your employer and how they view poker I guess.

Definitely would depend on the employer. Good luck

How you word it is prob dependent on the employer as well, along with the job field your getting into.

Posting your poker playing is better than not posting anything. If you have a 4 year gap with no school or work history, your interviewer will either assume you are omitting something on purpose, or that you were just a bum (both bad things).

Of course if you do put the poker thing, there is a 95% chance your interviewer will think you are just a degen gambler, or worse, if they are part of the whole conservative "family values" movement, they will look down on you for gambling.

Maybe just be creative, say you ran an affiliate website or rakeback website or something. Say you were self-employed internet entrepreneurship or something. Sounds better than 'poker pro"

What kind of job you applying for anyways? If it's entry level food service or retail, just leave it blank, cause they'll hire anyone.

If you're actually applying for a real job, you might be in trouble. What kind of job you hoping to get with no real relevant work experience or school?

not a good idea...had a few different bosses over the years all of which got a little wind of me playing and not one really took kindly to it. I mean honestly, understanding poker, and how it can profitable is the last thing a future employer wants to open themselves up to during an interview. Poker has a popular stigma, naturally, because most people lose. Expecting your interviewer to ignore that stigma in order to explain yourself is just not realistic. I would try to be creative and navigate around the truth tbh.

Simple question deserves simple answer. ABSOLUTLY NOT!!! Just say you were trying out school but you needed real money to support yourself. Besides, the kind of job someone would be qualified for with no experience and no education wouldn't care anyway. GL.

applying at a company called Sungard, have a really close friend who works there. As far as i know hes mainly picking orders and logging them on a computer. The only real job ive had was a seasonal job at an amazon warehouse picking orders so hopefully that helps a bit. But as you've said without including poker, there's a huge questionable gap in what ive been doing the past few years.

I didnt know you were sending it in tonight, but if it was me I would have either left it blank or made something up' tell em you were trying to be a golf pro or somthing during that time. Anything but poker.

It depends on what job you are applying for. I don't recommend lying on a resume to be honest. This can sometimes come back to bite you. People have been fired because they have lied on a resume.

I wouldn't be embarrassed to say professional poker player. I remember watching Jeopardy and there have been several contestants on the show who have mentioned they play poker professionally and nobody gives them a hard time.

If you are really concerned say you are a self employed Stock Trader. For some reason that form of gambling is more respected.
