If enough of you guys get together you can probably overthrow the Mexican government and then legalize weed and stuff and just have a little poker paradise...

Cuba may be up for grabs too.

I saw a nature documentary on Cuba the other night and I would insta-move there if it were possible. That country is breathtaking. Of course, the reason it's still like that is probably because we're not allowed there.

According to my stars phone call:

Once you have proof of residence outside the US, and a foreign bank account, they don't care where you live (as long as it's outside the US.) So once you get a bank account somewhere, you aren't tied to playing in that country.

I live in Australia - Problem with anybody planning on moving here is that where the US goes, we soon follow. Unless you actually play poker online people assume that online poker is the same as playing pokie (slot machines they might be called elsewhere???) machines. Even in the news.com.au where I read the article about the Stars, Tilt, etc shutdown they had a picture of a pokie machine.

Anyway my point is some well meaning, clueless, dip**** politician is bound to try to pass some legislation to stop us from playing soon enough. As an adult clearly I am not qualified to make a decision regarding how to spend my time/money even if it is not hurting anybody.

Any country you go where online poker is not explicitly legal, you face the risk of the same problems. So where is it explicitly legal?

Anyone PM me if you want to talk about ideas on where to travel, I am from New York, 24 M.

Where in NY? Me (24) and my buddy (25) grind together almost daily in Queens. Not sure what we will do now. Gonna wait a few weeks and see how things play out before making any serious decisions. Might have to dust off the college diploma and join the 9 to 5 world No idea how to explain the 2 yr gap in resume.

I did a comparison in TurboTax:

In U.S.:

80K Schedule C income: $24,000 tax bill

With foreign earned income exclusion:

80K Schedule C income: $11,000 tax bill

80K net "Gambling income not reported on W2-G" minus losses in itemized deductions: $0 tax bill

Not sure what criteria they would use to force you to use a schedule C though.

You have to file as schedule C (and pay SE tax) to get the foreign earned income exclusion. When I did the calcs I only saved a couple grand, not sure how yours is different

My understanding with Canada is that when your 6-month visitor visa runs out, you can just pay a small fee and get an automatic 6-month extension, and do this every six months indefinitely? I think they require you to show that you have enough money to support yourself ($1000 per month of your stay I think I read?), but otherwise you can just keep re-applying forever. I'll try to find some sources for this info and post it here soon, but maybe someone more knowledgeable can confirm/deny in the meantime?

What about going to a different country and playing under a resident's name? Let's say a trusted relative or someone you know won't rob you.

I would disagree with that. In my 3 years as a semi-pro on Everleaf, cash outs were done with perfectly legit wire transfers, and cash ins were done with various other legit methods (my last cash in about a year ago was done with a Visa, and the transaction was properly coded).

Unlike, say, AP, where my last cash in was coded as a transaction for wedding supplies. Thank God my girlfriend didn't see -that-.

A few questions about moving temporarily to Canada -

Any idea what it will take to open a Canadian bank account nowadays as a visiting US citizen and non-resident of Canada?

Does FTP have any restriction on transferring money to Canada currently?

If FTP will transfer money, what documentation does FTP require in such a situation where a player account was US based, and what withdrawal options are available? I imagine nobody here has been in this situation, but guesses are welcome.

My understanding is that it's pretty easy to open a Canadian bank account as a US citizen, I believe that someone posted earlier in this thread that you don't even necessarily have to be in Canada to open one.
